First time for me coming up in J on BA 744. So, is it better to face forwards or backwards? Any tips on seat selection (seatguru doesn't tell you much)? I was allocated 19G, just changed to 61K (upper deck). Can you get in and out of the rear facing seats easily?

I prefer seating forwards, as I'm a slightly paranoid flyer, but have sat rearward on the window once in CW and it wasn't as bad as I feared. Only issue with getting out is stepping past / hopping over the person in the forward facing seat adjacent to you - usually fine, slightly more awkward when they're sleeping but not overly so. The converse issue affects the person in the forward seat anyway, so it's a trade-off. Personal preference at the end of the day, I imagine.

62A/K and 64A/K are the better upper deck seats as you aren't facing other pax - the privacy facing the bulkhead in 64A/K is great, however these are bassinet positions and you risk losing your allocation if J pax with infants travel on your flight.

As a WP, you can select your seats on booking ahead of other lower status that are at T-24. But other seats may become available after the T-24.
Windows are rear facing, isle are forward, the only weird thing is the brace position for rear facing but hopefully you won't need that:p. Generally we prefer upstairs (quiet), my wife likes windows so has the rear facing and usually does not disturbed me when getting out whilst i'm sleeping. She is slightly vertical challenged:oops: so it's ok.
Agree 64A / K is probably the best, or front row 61 upstairs for an isle seat. Didnt like the exit isle seat 63B/J on a recent flight but I think 62A / K is better.

They havent changed their safety breifing music in many years so its always a nice reminder that you are on a BA flight.

PS I know one member in here who swears by downstairs front row isle :D

As my profile picture shows it is 62K on BA for me. No need to climb over anyone there. I am only lowly SG but can always preselect seats on BA from booking time

And now that melody is stuck in my head again:!:

Another vote here for 62A/K, rear facing, put up the privacy screen and it's great :)

Always 62K for me - in fact, I've just selected that seat for two upcoming BA flights.

Sitting backwards is not a problem (people do it on trains all the time!) and with this particular seat you can get out via the void for the exit door, so no stepping over others. As a window seat upstairs, you also get an additional side stowage bin, which is handy. They also have privacy screens at face height between the two seats, so you're not actually forced to look at your neighbour.

For those without status, BA does also allow pax to select seats from time of booking provided they pay a fee (generally 60 GBP for long-haul sectors). You will find the upper deck particularly fills quickly, as it's much better than downstairs.

I really enjoyed the storage room on my only BA J upper deck flight. I sat rearward & the takeoff sensation was different. Certainly heaps of privacy if required.

with the slight 'nose up' attitude of aircraft during flight you will find forward facing seats have a very slight elevation of your feet, whereas rear facing seats will have a slight elevation of the head.

Another vote for 62A/K. I have 62A preselected for a couple of trips in 2012.

I have flown both front and rear facing and to be honest don't mind either.

I'm testing out 64A SYD-BKK in Sep, unless I get bumped for a passenger needing the bassinet. Previously always flown 62 A/K but they were already taken :( This looked to be the next best option

I'd be interested to know how you go. Looks like I'll be flying a fair bit of BA in the next 18 months or so. (Unless QF can come up with $8k J fares to LHR)

For couples, many have suggested downstair the two rear facing central bulkhead seats. A little cocoon - with direct aisle access.

Had 64A LHR-SYD this week and have to say I like it. I will go as far as to say I prefer it to 12E on the QF A380. It is very private and has the feeling of a "suite". If you like windows you get 4 of them!!!.

Traveling with little ones, the BA J middle 4 seat row is perfect - 2 kids in the middle & bookends either side!

It's the only time I actively select the middle seat section - on any carrier. The two middle seats face backwards & the outside face forward.....perfect for that discreet death stare, nipple twist or comfort pat during turbulence/takeoff/landing.

Definitely another one for 64A, I used to be a 62AK person but after my first trip in 64A in April I will definitely go for that in the future. Even my Gold Bunny approved ;)
