Need to book a return award flight to Singapore in J and F from Aus. One flight will be QF the other Emirates. Something in my memory bank says that it was cheaper for the fuel fines if you did it as 2 one way redemptions. Can anyone confirm please. (waiting on my credit card points to post hence why I can't check myself)

General rule is that fuel fines are less on bookings originating in Australia, so better to do these as return. But for bookings originating outside Australia better to do as two one ways. However main variation is noticeable in economy cabin where fuel fines on tickets issued outside Australia can be >2x those issues in Australia. Difference is far less in premium cabins.

So general rule that applies to Y:
Aus-Asia return < 2 x one way < Asia-Aus return. J/F difference is much smaller.

Also depends on what country in Asia. Hong Kong & Manilla both do not allow fuel fines to be added, so if you are travelling there it usually works out much better to have flights issued from those countries.
