re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

I managed to find some availability to SIN, thanks. The challenge is now the return (SIN-MEL). I've tried several different origins to overcome the bug, but nada... any ideas?

Couldn't find anything myself so ended up booking QF on points. Was really hoping to avoid that as taxes are over $600 for two pax :( :(
At least it shows the new config in J...

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

Got kicked out of ANZ lounge at BNE flying EVA business. Despite I told the receptionist that as per Star Alliance rule I should be entitled to use the lounge. But the lady say EVA uses Qantas club as a special arrangement, and their list of Star Alliance airline doesn't include EVA.

Anyway, in Qantas club now. Not sure if the koru club was any better. Guess I'll have to find out later.

Koru club is awful, although per T&Cs you should be able to enter, I wouldn't even bother. The QC is slightly better IMO but still very ordinary. Save yourself for LGD champagne on the TPE-LHR leg :)

Apart from the weird psychadelic lighting i thought the BR Infinity lounge in TPE was excellent- good food, great staff, excellent shower rooms. I really liked BR

FYI, I just landed in TPE and is sitting in the Tronistic lounge. Took a nice shower as Qantas club BNE didn't replace the towel so I couldn't take it.

The A330 premium laurel is nothing to write about, but I received a Rimowa amenity kit! That was surprising as I thought only Royal Laurel gets it, not premium laurel. That means I'll go home with 2 Rimowa kit! Quite happy I booked BR instead of TG. It's not easy to get BNE-TPE using LM now.

I was talking about the BNE lounges in the post you quoted. Agree the BR lounge in TPE is great. I actually liked the different lightning, gives the place a more funky and less 'business' look.

Thanks for taking the credit for CTS ...

Sorry, I didn't mean to take credit from you.

Yes, it was Seritonin who discovered the loophole so he should get all the credits.

Only teasing..., doesn't bother me at all. It's not even one ofthose lifemiles tricks...

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

Arrived in LHR yesterday. Thought I would give a quick report on my experience of BR J.

BNE-TPE. Premium Laurel on A330-200
- lounge: Qantas club. An ordinary lounge that is completely outdated needing an update. Food wise only sausage roll and meat ball plus the usual cold salads you find in domestic Qantas club. But it's probably the best lounge in BNE. Not allowed in ANZ's koru club even though all star alliance.
- seat: angled lie flat at 2-2-2. Not that comfortable. IMO, they should use 77W for the BNE route. But I don't think they will as most airlines servicing AU (esp BNE) have all given us their inferior J products, so no competition for them to upgrade.
- food&drink: most review I read criticized heavily on BR's catering. I think it is a cultural thing. The taste is geared more towards Asian. Personally I feel it's much better than QF's catering for business class. Alcohol wise, they don't serve Dom anymore, but La Grande Dame 2004. Not bad still. But I'm amazed that Choya's plum liquor is available. Most airlines only serve this with their Japan route.
- Amenity kit: this is the best part! Rimowa! No other business class will give you this.
- Cost: 40000 LM one way. I used it as part of BNE-LHR at 87.5k LM (before the "devaluation"). It's not as easy to redeem now since BR closed it's inventory to partners. Usually this route will need to be T-14 to get J. So even though I paid slightly more miles I think it was worth it.
RRP: Normally you can buy this for just under $3000 rt, which is one of the cheapest J fare out there.

TPE-LHR (via BKK), Royal Laurel on 777-300ER
- Lounge: EVA's infinity lounge in TPE. It has a very futuristic Tron like decor and lighting. Not to everyone's taste but I don't really care. Nice shower and nice food. Good selection of Taiwanese stuff but not Western. The lounge is small consider it's their flagship lounge. But EVA has 4 lounges (infinity, star, garden and another one I can't recall the name) all next to each other in TPE. So I think everyone gets allocated to one as I have to show the invitation card upon entry. My card says "infinity lounge" so I ended up there.
- Seat: Reverse herringbone in 1-2-1 configuration. Full flat and very private. It's not very comfortable to sleep tho as you can feel the bumps and gaps on the seat. I put my blanket on it and sleep on top of the blanket. That makes it more comfortable.
- Food and drink: the main meal between BKK-LHR is pretty good. It's 6 course meal: appetizer, soup, salad, main course, cheese plate, fruit plate, dessert plus ice cream! The fruit/cheese plate comes in a trolley where you can pick what you want. So I think it is pretty good for business class standard. There was also in flight snack which included some pies, instant noodle, prawn skewer, salad.....etc. I was so full that I didn't order any. I don't know how others can report that they actually stayed hungry with EVA. Drink-wise is the same as BNE-TPE.
- Amenity kit: another Rimowa scored! On top of that , you get a pajama! The quality is quite good. Definitely better than QF business pajama and about the same as my JAL first pajama.
- Cost: 75000 LM, TPE-LHR. Award space is scarce now but it's there. Definitely better than QF's but still hard to find now. About 2-3 days per month.
- RRP: you can get BNE - Europe/USA on BR for about $5500. The cheapest J out there. About the same cost as MH but much better product (especially now MH has grounded 2 of their A380). If I have to pay for revenue ticket, EVA will definitely on top of my list.

Some of you might ask, what about the service? Well, I personally feel the service has been pretty good but definitely not in the realm of SQ/NH. (JL was also pretty good but that was F) but I would say better than QF and EK. I've also read some bad reports about their service, but I suspect it's language barrier. I can speak mandarin so it was never a problem. I'm the type who likes to be left alone but expect service when called. I can say the flight attendant appeared within 1 minute of me buzzing them, comapre to 15 minutes with QF. This is J we are talking about.

Overall, I will definitely fly with them again (if I can find award space). It will be hard now that Ex-BNE is T-14, plus most transit time will be > 8 hrs, and all other routes are hard to find too.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

Nice review, but no mention of the pretty BR hostess's who do a wonderful job at smiling at passengers and making them feel nice and fuzzy inside :)

Great report VAG newbie. What was the total travel time?

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

I too really enjoyed my flights with BR

I flew SIN-TPE-JFK on their 777-300 royal laurel, drank 8+ glasses of Dom on the TPE-JFK leg, REALLY enjoyed the congee for breakfast, was amazing. Slept like a baby too ;)

I could tell you how I really enjoyed my Ansett flights too, but I was much younger then. ;)

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

Great report VAG newbie. What was the total travel time?

30+ hour! 8.5hr BNE-TPE. 4 hr layover in TPE, then 4hr TPE-BKK. 1hr layover in BKK, plus 12hr BKK-LHR.

It sounds crazily long but when you really enjoyed the flight, the time flies (pun intended!).

Back then the choice I had using LM other than BR were TG BNE-BKK-LHR (no screenshot needed at the time) or SQ SIN-LHR (@65000 LM).

TG uses 747 which has angled lie flat 2-3-2 to LHR so it wasn't desirable.

SQ was nice but had to somehow buy economy one way BNE-SIN. Even tho I could check my baggage through with 2 separate PNR, I was told by SQ that if my incoming flight was delayed and miss the connecting flight, LM is responsible to rebook me, not SQ. So I didn't want to risk it.

So even tho BR wasn't the most direct flight, I wanted to try out royal laurel so I booked it! I'll enjoy SQ suite (using KF miles) on my way back anyway so I wanted to try different airlines.

Well, how much LM has changed since. BR BNE-LHR is almost impossible to get now. SQ has shut it's door to LM completely (almost), and TG now requires screenshot but with the possibility they will cut BNE.

re: Avianca "Life Miles" - Questions and Discussion

Just trying to work out how many people have had luck with asking for SQ J flights more than 14 days out with the screenshot method. I could be tempted to buy some miles in this current promotion if there was a chance I could get SQ instead of TG ( I live in Brissie so TG is a very unviable option in the medium term, and I am looking at travel in May next year)

Anyone had any luck getting the screenshots made into a reservation and then buying the points?
Thanks

The process involves looking for a connection beyond singapore - for example to CGK or KUL.

Availability might be hard to find... but if you can get it, it should be a two or three segment flight (sometimes even includes sectors on say MS).

You then take the screen shot of the total itinerary (AU-SIN-xx_-CGK), then another for AU to SIN (which will show nothing) and send that off asking LM to ticket just the AU-SIN leg only.
