Have you thought of the Airport Express to Tokyo central then the Bullet train to Kyoto? The time would not be much of a difference, rail ticket might be a bit more than the air fare but would get you there in much more comfort.

Unlikely to help most, but if you are in DRW or similar, there is the option of a 3K flight to SIN (self funded) and CX SIN-HKG-[USA].

Doing the return of this in a few weeks but have to work out if I take the F flight I have on old with CX or stay two extra days and come back J. Ho hum, first world problems.

Its beyond a joke that so few J seats are available on say QF these days to/from USA unless you book near a year out, of course gong through say KUL or HKG is an option or use points to HNL then to mainland from there or the reverse, then J seats are not so hard to find.

I found 2 x QF reward seat SYD-DFW next year 1 x J and 1 x F on same day. I can also see it on BA as available as well

Have other members found this to be accurate to be able to book both ?

On 2 sites yes, should be able to book QF AA direct online, if not call, don't wait.

Have noticed this week that AA Economy Milesaver awards to USA have all disappeared for Sept 2016 - usually QF 11 awards available everyday - AA Economy Anytime seems to have replaced the Milesavers - wonder if it is related to the new QF/AA partnership.

We wanted QF award 2 x J to USA of late, for next Aug/Sept, gave up on OZ to mainland USA did the unthinkable and booked 2 x JQ in "J" (PE) bulkhead seats to HNL then paid onwards to SEA on AS, return on real airline QF out of DFW, problem solved.
