But... one thing to think about is that pax generally can't heat their own food. A few here have suggested Dr Mum should being food, yes, true but I read that the picky eater was keen on a hot meal?

Thermos of hot soup? Wrap something in foil?

Doesn't the crew have the ultimate (and only) say in assessment of risk? Even if on an individual level that can be rationalised - eg by the parent - then I'm siding with the crew.

I wouldn't have thought that is correct as a blanket statement. A person could have had a stroke, which the crew mistake for the person being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In that case their risk assessment would be wrong.

There have been instances where crew have decided to ban passengers because they didn't like the ethnicity of a passenger, or what a passenger was wearing. Their assessment of risk was wrong.

In this particular case it doesn't sound like the mother was being particularly helpful. Enough to divert a plane? Or was the airline making a point? Were the passengers or aircraft in danger, or were passengers merely being hugely inconvenienced?

Soup won't meet the LAGS requirement for US

Is that even internally? Ok, back to foil wrap then. Or a tiny thermos. :p

Their assessment may be wrong but who else should we use? A random? In the case of medical the crew call for Doctors. In the case of behaviour - it has to be crew call. And in this case even the mother said it might escalate. I understand it was all about behaviour. I am not thinking of discrimination based on dress or ethnicity.

Cant always trust the crew-
Flight attendant files wrongful death suit against Southwest Airlines | Road Warrior Voices
When the flight landed, a crew member called the police, allegedly believing that Ilczyszyn was a disruptive passenger. In a phone call, a Southwest employee told the dispatcher:
Apparently there’s a passenger in – locked himself in the lav and is screaming and yelling
All of the passengers were instructed to leave the plane before the officers boarded the aircraft, discovering an “unresponsive” Ilczyszyn in the bathroom. The paramedics were then called to the scene.

That is extremely sad drron.

"It’s possible that they could not determine that there was not a serious security risk to the flight."

What absolute garbage. So you let a man die? Occassionally I moan and groan if I am not feeling well. It could be worse if I am having a panic attack. I would like to think that I would get the proper assistance not treated like I am threat to security of the aircraft.

If a flight attendant cannot make that assessment then they need to think about a different career. And I agree with the lawsuit.

She was in Y, not F. If she was so picky the food should have been brought with her instead of risking it with whatever was served onboard.

For me, the question is not should she have been given F food in Y, or should the mother have being more prepared, but rather was she really that much of a flight risk that the only available option to the airline was to divert and kick her off?

IMHO that is the question which should be under discussion. Is she entitled to F food under Y? Of course not. Should the mother have prepared things better? Of course she should have. Was stating that her daughter was going to be a handful to FA's a dumb thing to say? Absolutely no doubt. Was she really that much of a threat that 30 minutes after the situation had calmed down there was still reason for a diversion? That is the question.
