A first attempt at a short trip report
After the BA strikes were announced and we saw that their flights to Dubrovnik would not be operating we changed our return flights to Austrian Airlines one of the few alternatives on the London Dubrovnik route.
Boarding at LHR seemed very disorganised. Apparently Austrian normally use an aerobridge but none was available for our flight so we were bussed to the plane.
The passengers on the first bus were sent up the rear stairs, the passengers on the second bus, the one we were one were told they were not allowed to use the rear stairs; they had to use the forward stairs. You can imagine the confusion on board with passengers who boarded at the rear with forward seats battling to get past passengers who boarded at the front who were seated at the rear.
Needless to say we had a late departure, not good when we had a tight connection of twenty five minutes in Vienna.
We landed at Vienna at the time our connecting flight to Dubrovnik should have been departing. Our flight pulled into a satellite terminal at an aerobridge, but it wasn’t used, instead we were bussed to the main terminal, more time wasted.
When we got to the terminal we were told we had to take a bus back to the terminal we had just arrived at to make our connection! So we boarded another bus back to the satellite terminal where we had to go through security again before going to our gate.
Confusion, our boarding passes said our flight left from Gate C58. There were signs pointing to a Gate C58 but there seemed to be no way to get to it. After walking in circles we went back and asked security where to go they directed us to Gate C38.
By this time we were running fully expecting to have missed our flight, we got to the top of the stairs at Gate C38 and the board showed that they were boarding a flight to Dusseldorf!
We showed the gate attendant our boarding passes and asked where does this flight leave from? “Here she said”. But the board says Dusseldorf? “That’s right she said Dubrovnik!”
So we finally made the connection, last passengers to board. Our bags didn’t make it though; they were delivered the next day.
The return flight and connection ran much more smoothly thankfully, I would fly Austrian again perhaps they were just having an off day on the outward flight.
Austrian would also have to serve the best coffee I have ever had on an airline, I don’t know why QF’s has to be so bad when Austrian can have it so good.
