I read with interest the following article, andthe humour of other events notwithstanding I felt compelled to commenton the Perfume incident.
Mrs GPH is (and it’s getting worse as time goeson) highly allergic to most perfumes, especially when they are 1. appliedliberally (why this happens is a mystery to me) and 2. when in a confinedspace.
Even as a mere male, I was always led to believethat perfume (good bad or otherwise) was something someone other than the wearer only got to smell if they were inthe close intimate range of the wearer.
I wold be interested to know what others thinkabout this, (read the article before responding) and how they would deal withit.

Australian traveller pens hilarious tale of flight horror

I also have issues with perfume (or any strong fragrance). Make me sneeze endlessly. Should have seen the negotiations I went through to convince my mum not to wear any for our flight to LA...she thought her smelling nice trumped my being able to breath. I can always tell if someone has sprayed perfume from several room away....

I have been told I need to get over myself and sort out my problems when I have politely asked family members not to wear perfume in my office and car! I get a severe headache, can't breath and my scalp itches, so it's not a small problem. NB: My dermatologist is allergic to perfume and does not mention this to patients. She tells them she has hay fever when she starts sneezing!

One of the labs at my last work had a sign on the door that said it was a perfume free space due to allergies. If only it was that simple out in the real world. The worst Ive encountered is a lady in front of me on an escalator who decided to unload half a bottle on herself. Unfortunately at that moment a train pulled into the station and I wore the lot. That was a very unpleasant trip home...

Some perfume is overpowering. Some people wear too much perfume.

Unless it made me violently ill not too much one can do about it. Have a quiet word to the FA's if it's possible to move/swap/change seats.

Sadly I think that "James" may lose his job over the hundreds of dollars worth of Taittinger being given away to a Y pax and being known so publicly.

sadly that was my reaction too. hopefully the lass had the sense to change a few details before the story to protect the innocent, but I doubt it

The perfume referred to in the article is overpowering IMO and definitely not one I'd consider suitable to wear in an aircraft. I actually wouldn't wear it at all as it's not my style of scent.
I do wear perfume daily, small amount (Coco Mademoiselle) and definitely wear it very sparingly when traveling.
Hope "James" name is anything but James

I just love the reaction of the "victim" in the article to the writer's perfume. It's as if the writer is on some vendetta against people with low tolerance to perfume.

Chill out people (victim in article - not people in this thread). There are lots of different people in the world with lots of different issues - everyone won't necessarily have heard of "perfume intolerance". I think you just need to politely ask FAs if you can move - not create a massive scene with associated tantrum (per the article).

People can't reasonably expect everyone else in the world they encounter to be aware of their personal issues - chill out when it happens - or buy a premium class / seat next to you.
