I've heard various things between Feb and Apr. They've been laying the groundwork for requiring 90% vax rate.

If true it’s so unfair to the WA residents that have done the right thing and gotten vaccinated while the WA anti vaxxers that seem to control WA continue to hold everyone back… it’s not the right people being punished.

when i was cancelling WA accom for out extremely hopeful xmas 2021 trip couple months ago, 2 of the accom receptions did tell me they'll open to us eastern states in April.

Now of course they weren't ever to really now that opening date, but must've been what they understood it to be, rumors etc.

work colleagues i speak to over out west just have no urgency to get the jab, they'll get it, just not fazed by anything related to vaccine & covid.

The after the school holidays bit seemed constant, it was the length of the buffer that varied!

We have crossed into Tocumwal for lunch today.


We have been on the Murray enjoying an extra long Long Weekend and with the border reopening have crossed over.

Mind you there were already a lot NSW plates on the Vic side anyway.

Premier Mark McGowan is announcing the state’s safe transition plan.

“We do not want to fall at the last hurdle. The plan will take effect when Western Australia reaches a 90 per cent double-dose vaccination rate for people aged 12 and above. That is forecast to take place in late January or early February.”
“I want to stress the 90% target threshold could be reached earlier or later, but once we hit 80% and then set the specific date for transition, that date will be locked in.”

While interstate borders will open up at that point, INTRAstate borders may be created if there are regions with low vaxx rates at that time.

“This measure would be in place until the vaccination rate in those regions is lifted to satisfactory levels. Cutting off the Pilbara or any region, for that matter, is not something I want to do. But if that’s what is required to protect the local community and local industries, then we will take that step based on the health advice at the time.”

The Premier says the WA government’s modelling will be released to the public shortly:

"Put simply, if we eased our borders earlier at 80 per cent, modelling suggests widespread community transmission would result in far more infections, hospitalisations, and deaths.
"Instead, waiting for our vaccination rate to hit 90 per cent double-dose would mean that when the state reaches widespread community transmission, the number of general ward beds that would be occupied are reduced by 70 per cent; ICU beds that would be occupied are reduced by 75 per cent; and the coughulative number of deaths is reduced by 63 per cent.
“The difference in easing border controls at 90 per cent rather than 80 per cent is 200 West Australian lives are saved.”

Mind you there were already a lot NSW plates on the Vic side anyway.

Possibly most are border residents. NSW is common within Wodonga (and Vic in Albury). Other states are rare.

Probably to protect the indigenous populations of the Pilbara and Kimberley. Vaccination rates are very low there.

I'd prefer the ABC summary but the key point for me is this:

A specific transition day to reopen to domestic and international travellers would be announced after an 80 per cent double dose vaccination rate was reached.

"I want to stress the 90 per cent target threshold could be reached earlier or later, but once we hit 80 per cent and then set the specific date for transition, that date will be locked in," he said.

So what I'm hearing is that when we hit 80% DD, they will project a 90% date, and then we get certainty of an opening date from there.
Personally this is frustrating, I was expecting that double dosed WA residents might get some sort of guarantee they'd be allowed back in in the meantime (albeit with test on return and quarantine if positive).

I think that's the plan:

• Vaccination proof will be needed to get into nightclubs, the casino, and large events with crowds of more than 1,000 people like at the football or a concert

And I'd be very surprised if the restrictions for the unvaccinated don't get stricter, if the restrictions over east prove successful.

Unfortunately, with no covid in the community and Mark keeping the border shut, there's been no impetus to do so. It's somewhat understandable when it isn't impacting us, and if your bubble doesn't involve interstate/overseas family or work. But I do think that a firm opening date will be the kick that spurs this group into action.

Alongside school vax programs for 12-15s and mandatory vaccinations coming into effect by end January, I think we'll be in the 90s for an opening by early Feb.

I agree, no covid, no urgency. completely understand the lacklustre vax uptake rate.

I chuckle that MClown states if there's an outbreak we'll step-up the the restrictions........covid will arrive that's 100% sure, don't even call it an outbreak anymore, with NSW ~300 & VIC ~1000 per day, no mention of outbreak, it's just called 'Living with Covid', not many concerned by the daily number anymore. we just creep towards 90% 12+ & that's it.

Does Mark have hope there may not be an outbreak?
Why doesn't just say we can deal & manage with xx_x hospital cases of covid, ventilator etc, spread is inevitable, knock me down, ha!
