Australian state border restrictions

This article from the ABC refers to something I've heard Mark say a few times which is that he wants to avoid introducing restrictions in WA during the Christmas period.

I take the point that hospitality venues would suffer in one of their busiest times of the year, and many families would resent / not comply with restrictions at family gatherings. But I wonder the net impact of increased local spending & tourism vs inbound interstate tourists. This seems to have have struck a chord with hospitality / tourism lobbies, else I imagine they'd be much more vocal:

Interesting that the border is now about 'social convenience'.

Yep. And I think this is where Stockholm syndrome has well and truly set in. State border closures are well shy of “the norm”. They came to be because of a “health emergency”. The way they’ve been used is questionable, at best. To now have premiers continuing to use them purely for social reasons is a major concern. We are one country at the end of the day, and there is no way we can normalize this sort of conduct.

McGowan’s comments today suggest the border won’t automatically close to COVID-free states that let in people from NSW/Vic. Instead it will be based on community transmission (same as now). I’m watching this like a hawk too as I want to travel to QLD from WA for Xmas.
But once any state, SA, QLD, TAS open to NSW & Vic, then covid will appear, even if all at 90%. Theres simple no doubt in this.

It will appear in the community, ppl will end up in hospital, obviously not at huge numbers, but MClown wants zero community transmission in WA.

Nowhere he's said anything different.

Even AP has worken from her slumber to realize "covid is coming" get vaxd!

Either way he'll open someone 2022.
Who needs tourism when you have iron ore.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Ironic given that I’ve tested positive and would be shot on sight to see this message from a long-ago cancelled trip…

PS: closing your credit card in a time of large number of airline tax/fee/charge refunds is a pain in the neck. Despite sending all of the proof QF asked for, of course the tax refund arrived as a bank cheque. My main bank (Newcastle Permanent) has no branches in Sydney, and doesnt appear to be a bank@post partner, so I had to go to the post office and buy an envelope - quite a quaint experience - and then post the cheque to them in Newcastle.

PVR tests are not free for personal travel. Around $145. Of course you could you have been in a suspect shop…..

*PCR 😆

Lol and no it wasn’t a suspect shop, I just had a little ‘sniffle’ so got a free one.

I’m not paying for a PCR for domestic travel for some random power mad premier can get re-elected. Nor am I doing any domestic quarantine (unless my work requires me to).

Alternatively people can just whip up their own test and the states would not be able to check anyway very easily. I doubt a queue of 400 people at an airport / road border are going to be policed that closely. It’s going to be impossible…

With at home testing available from supermarkets next week I suspect this might have a role to play…

Hopefully.

I think Covid testing is going to become part of life. Once a test exists, you can be sure that the OH&S people will start to make it mandatory. There's places I go where I have to have a drug and alcohol test fourteen days prior to visiting. I can understand the drug test, but why alcohol? It's perfectly legal. Different once on site, but fourteen days prior? I asked the question as to why they did this and was basically told; "because they can". I see Covid testing becoming the same.

After initial nervousness, I've ascertained by experimentation that an alcohol test in the morning does not pick up the evening before's red wine. Consumed at social levels anyway.

But you must have noticed how much 6 of us could drink even after having wine for lunch.

Personally, I don't think they fill the bottles up properly these days.

So with further relaxed quarantine restrictions coming in CBR from Nov 1, does this mean one can in theory go to NSW or VIC today and return on 01/11 and don't have to quarantine?

Traveling between states is a pain, it used to be book airline, book hotel done.
Now its find travel credit from Airline, then ring airline to book flight, lucky they found credit and then book hotel and then complete 2 x border passes, from where you are leaving from and where you are going to.
It will be fun to go flying.

Wish I could agree. I have been mulling over today, is there any point in retaining airline status any more? Trips are going to be less frequent, less enjoyable, more stressful. Potentially mix in COVID tests as an expense, and frankly it's starting to look rather unattractive.

Short trips are not going to be worth it especially. People will take less trips but of longer duration. I would imagine that airlines will have to cut status credit requirements but who knows.

It depends, in the real world where travel is pretty much back to normal (i.e. outside of Australia) short trips are very easy.

Well I'm SG and LTS is within sight, so I think I will push on to get LTS at least, not that it gets me very much of the things I want from status, but still it's better than nothing.

Interstate travel is not where I earn the bulk of my SCs anyway, but the easing of state border restrictions will be welcome.
