Australian state border restrictions

If Tasmania don't need a lockdown, then the understanding is that Tasmania doesn't qualify for Federal covid-related support.

Tas Premier is concerned about an overwhelmed hospital system from opening up the State borders too early - the quote from ABC blog is

COVID modelling suggests almost 100 people would die within six months of Tasmania opening up at 80 per cent vaccination

Premier Peter Gutwein says modelling suggests opening the state up with an 80 per cent vaccination rate would result in 14,900 cases and nearly 100 deaths within the first six months.

Tas Premier is adopting an 'everyone has an opportunity to have the vaccine' approach, which is where some people were advocating for not too long ago (back in June) when vaccination rates were woeful. It seems he accepts cases will happen, just let everyone have a chance to get vaccinated - it seems people are still turniing up in Tas to get vaccinate 30k (per week???)
Their tourism industry received support. He is targeting 90% vax rates which is different to the 80% he (and the other premiers) agreed to in the National Plan

Shifting sands. At some point a critical mass of people won't stand for it. Already happening in the two bigger states, you'd say

Good news our two biggest states are moving forward while the rest tread water

NSW to begin talks on Victorian border

The NSW Premier says she will begin talks with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews about reopening the border in a few weeks.

Why are talks required? NSW have not closed their border so it is just up to Vic to open. What am I missing?

Whilst NSW borders are closed the way Vics are, there are currently some restrictions on entering form ACT and Vic, so probably getting rid of the declarations.

Maybe Dan is getting worried that with Vic and NSW cases going in opposite directions that Vic residents stranded in NSW might decide to stay there, perhaps permanently?

Probably. The ABS looked at state population increases/declines over the last year and only Victoria had a net decline due to people migrating permanently overseas and interstate. It was driven by last years extended lockdowns, will be interesting if the trend continues this year, or things normalise ahead of international borders opening and allowing in bound migration again.

Qld was the big winner in domestic migration last year, gaining many many residents from both Vic and NSW. Wonder of any will come back when NSW and Vic have more freedoms than Qld i.e. we are travelling internationally but Qld still closed to anyone south of the border.

What does the Tasi modelling show for 90% vac'd?? We know 100 deaths & 15k cases @80%.
half those figures???
Are the deaths (suicide) from business going bust count, how many deaths are there in other circumstances of 100 in 6 months?

Ah some slow to the realization of living with covid, I don't get it as a Victorian, guess those in WA, Tasi & maybe QLD will have an understanding / thinking of keeping covid zero, unless their in the tourism business.

Re; NSW/VIC border with like4like cases, just open anytime, can only benefit all.

Bring on summer & openness.

Agreed even on the ‘deadliest day’ in NSW (as breathlessly reported on the news) it’s time to just get on with it.

Completely useless. Hoping the tapering of the Fed support forces a reopening.

The latest intra-Tassie voucher play fizzled apparently too, people took them up not many using and when they do not spending heaps.

So same story as WA and QLD, it seems when locals holiday they are very tight!

Gold Coast hotels apparently at 38% occupancy in what was supposed to be a peak period. What a mess.

I for one would like to thank the Victorian Police Force for basically closing the border in the northerly direction free of charge on the behalf of the taxpayers of NSW... /s

The other thing with Tasmania is that if they don't provide some form of a plan soon, the Sydney to Hobart will be cancelled again.

I also expect QF/JQ and VA to cancel almost all services to NSW and VIC.

Living in Sydney with my parents in Northern Tasmania, all of us fully vaccinated, will be infuriating at Christmas. I am not the only one, there's heaps of Tasmanians with children on the mainland.

Victoria is basically an extension of Tasmania / the other way around if you like…. It will be devastating for tens of thousands of people split up if they keep moving the goal posts for many, yourself included :(

Yup, just gave my mum the names of her local Liberal MHAs... she's calling all of them tomorrow. Don't annoy retirees, they have lots of time.

Isn't that pretty much always a given. Locals, or near locals, will not spend anything like the money that long distance tourists will. They do not pay for expensive hotel rooms, nor expensive tours, or restaurants.

It's not closed. The Victorian police don't hassle anyone heading north across the border, though they might make it hard to come back.

The last time I was stopped at a check point, they were located about 2km inside the Victorian border, and for some reason seemed to think I needed a permit to come back from the restaurant that was 1.5km down the road...but still pretty firmly anchored to Victoria.

I know it's not closed, but the "implication" of making it hard to come back achieves pretty much the same thing.

The people of Albury/Wodonga, Echuca/Moama, Yarrawonga/Mulwala etc must be going nuts by now.

By the sounds of it the plan is home quarantine is available until everyone has been offered a jab - about 100-odd have applied and been granted home quarantine.

That's not going to work for any form of tourism.

So what is the Tasmanian government doing to get everyone to be offered a jab? The best way is to set a date. There are ZERO, NONE, NIL supply issues any more.

I'm considering leaving VIC, but if I do that it will take some time to unwind my affairs in VIC. That probably won't happen till at least around the end of 2022. If I can't reliably go and visit family interstate whenever I choose I may as well move overseas and see more of family overseas.

I'm fully vaccinated. It makes no sense to not permit me to go and visit a fully vaccinated relative interstate, if not now, from 2 weeks after the second dose I had earlier this week.

Its frustrating and I don't know whether you are in a frame of mind to hear the information, but currently Tasmania is vaccinating at about 30k jabs per week. I don't know whether Tasmania intends to increase capacity as such and whether the deliveries from the Commonwealth have been as per schedule (ie something akin to the Horizons document).

12+ population is estimated at about 466k, 333k have had at least 1 jab (of the 333k, 254k have had the second jab)

Right now, it's reasonably open. Dan relented a week or so ago, and locals no longer need any reasons to cross.
The people of Albury/Wodonga, Echuca/Moama, Yarrawonga/Mulwala etc must be going nuts by now.
I think the emotion would be closer to seething anger, at the politicians on both sides of the border. They've both been playing the close or restrict game, and I think it was Gladys who started it. But, the upshot has been some form of restriction for almost 18 months. As one side comes out of a crisis, the other side goes in, so the border is simply a football, that they kick to each other. The number of closed businesses is pretty staggering. Mostly on Dan's side, especially since he took a fancy to locking down all of the regions any time a case appeared anywhere. If he was planning on killing businesses, he really couldn't have done a much better job.
