Australian state border restrictions

I cannot fathom how there is still no vaccine target. These vaccines have been around for over half a year now. I really cannot see how it’s acceptable that a plan is still being put together.

I've asked (in general) before - exactly what do people want in a 'vaccination target or plan'? The message I hear is "everyone who can, get vaccinated as soon as you can, with the vaccine appropriate for you (+/- dr advice)." Sounds like a target/plan to me.

"Targets" - that old chestnut, a mechanism to get something on paper that can only fail. Absent pinning people down and forcing a needle in, government can't force a certain % to get vaccinated. So if they set a target for certain things to then happen, and it isn't met because the punters won't get the needle, what happens then? The target/plan fails.

Side effects of Pfizer are out there. What happens if Pfizer hesitancy emerges OR its declared not suitable for certain groups. Again, target/plan fails.

What happens if a new strain emerges, resistant or more resistant to all the present vaccines, so its pointless to get it - hesitancy becomes 'stop'. Would you expect the government to ahhere to a plan/target set now?

The target I hear "everyone who can, get vaccinated". Seems clear to me.

PS a more pertient question might be "What's the target date for ending lockdown in xx_ state?". And the answer is equally elusive, for the same basic reasons - things unknown and unknowable at the moment.

Pretty simple really. “By xx_ date we will have offered everyone a vaccine. All restrictions will be lifted on that date. Alternatively, upon reaching xx_ % of fully vaccinated adults and xx_ % of adults over 50, all restrictions will be lifted. This is scheduled to be on xx_x date”.

This allows an awful lot of forward planning to be done by those who have their livelihood depend on people being able to walk out their front door (which I would say is a large percentage of people who don’t work in the public service).

There is no excuse for the commonwealth not being able to fill in the xx_’s at this point.

Potentially because they cannot control the supply of Pfizer / Moderna?

I think Albos idea of getting mRNA vaccine production domestically is a good one, this wont be going anywhere soon.

The problem is we’re looking at 2023 for that. If boosters are needed there’d be at least one or two boosters before that facility is up and running.

Great plan, except that the Feds don't control restrictions!! Given the behavious of the various Premiers at National Cabinet, and after those, just how do you suppose the Federal Givt can plan/promise/undertake to have "all (or whatever) restrictions" lifted? And even if somehow the Feds could get binding commitments from the Premiers ( 🤣 ) they would be different on a state-by-state basis.

So, a 'target' might be set, but it would be meaningless and undeliverable by the agency declaring the target, like many targets these days are. "Aspirational" I think is the term.

This was announced in Victoria ages ago. HArdly a new idea or initative.

The only chance we can get home made mRNA vaccines in Australia depends on talks between Moderna and a Australian company who have a manufacturing plant in Adelaide which apparently could easily be modified to produce mRNA vaccines.Similiar to what Moderna did in Germany last year.

It was stated today in SA that we have to have zero community transmission until "everyone" is vaccinated before we can have fully open borders. Might have to move interstate.

At first the headlines about this deal seemed interesting. That was until you read further and realised Pfizer is still not licensing production elsewhere but is basically just allowing a 'bottling agreement'. This agreement is apparently receiving criticism from Doctors Without Borders "She criticized the agreement’s failure to share Pfizer-BioNTech’s technology and know-how to independently manufacture vaccines with the South African company."

Yes the only way we will manufacture Pfizer vaccines here in Australia is if Pfizer builds the manufacturing the plant themselves. They always control their own manufacturing.I believe that they are building a plant in Singapore so absolutely no chance this will happen here.

A number of my colleagues from SYD & MEL have been denied Special Skills Exemptions for a major time-sensitive construction project in Tassie, despite no suitable resources available locally.

I told them to source a Pacific Islands passport and offer to pick fruit at $3 per hour, given the HBA Quarantine Hotels are packed with Samoans.

You should have said they were Big Brother contestants.

Seems reasonable. I'm classified as an essential worker but I'm not even thinking of going to Sydney at the moment. A project may be time sensitive but it'll lose a lot more time if the State has to lock down.
What special skill set were they offering?

Bespoke Tech/Engineering, with no local agents skilled enough.

They are happy to do their 14 days in Hotel/Airbnb Quarantine, but that doesn't cut it apparently.

Previously (~8 months ago), plasterers for a hotel development got through (no HQ) - but that raised a small amount of hell  . But these days, while the service may be "essential" for a particular business, if the business isn't "essential"in the government's eyes, no dice. Plenty of things on hold here because a business can't get service-people in.
