Australian state border restrictions

I don’t understand why Vic would declare all of NSW (and ACT) a hotspot. Talk about jumping at shadows.

In todays's Vic presser one of the reporters basically mentioned being "triggered" by the Sydney siutiation, there are a lot of Melburnians who were beig insular and demanding the border close entirely. Andrews knows the decision will be politically popular so openly said if AHPPC didnt reach a consensus Vic would go it alone.

Where's the sarcastic shocked emoji?

Question is will Queensland follow? I'm due to fly to Brisbane in the morning.
I don’t see why they would, given there have been no cases or contact locations outside the Sydney Metro area. Unless some intel out of today’s AHPPC meeting.

My brother in Newcastle has seen his neighbor across the road have their grandchildren from Sydney come to stay on two occasions during the lockdown. The children couldn't get there by themselves, so the parents probably drove them up and returned to Sydney, thereby flouting the lockdown perimeters. Who knows if any of that family might subsequently become infected and then spread it about Newcastle? Unfortunately that is why all of NSW has become a red zone.

That might fit under the premise of "Essential Care" which is permitted, we don't know the full circumstances.

Unfortunately if there is a leak out of the lockdown area Newcastle will be the first to fall, we are very closely integrated with the Central Coast and a lesser extent Sydney.

I'm on record for saying I don't have a problem with closing borders to NSW now. I fight unnecessary border closures tooth and nail, but I don't think this is unnecessary.

Ignoring any question of whether it is needed or not, the functionality of it does seem to have been better thought out by the Victorian government this time around. No sign of any plans to divide towns in half, and so making the lives of those living in them even more miserable. There’s at least one checkpoint on the highway, but apparently it’s making sensible use of number plater readers, so not everyone is being stopped. It’s also not inside a town.

Last time around it was a medical disaster, with people who needed to get to Melbourne being unable to do so. I just had a look at the updated site, and they’ve specifically addressed this, and similar concerns, so it shouldn‘t have the same impact on Albury that it did last time. As an aside, a friend of mine who was caught up in this last time around, will probably die because of the delayed treatment (by both sides of the border), but I guess it won’t be counted as a death caused by bureaucratic ineptitude.

Of course, I am talking about an Australian government, so there’s plenty of time for them to screw it up.

Spoke too soon. The morons are in the process of dividing the town in half again.
What happened to using technology to minimise the impact on the locals?

I was about to say, the only reason Queensland hasn't closed their border is they know if they close it they have to police it, which is very unpopular with the locals.

I'm sure they'll still close it though, surprised they haven't already.

AP just announcing NO hard border closure to NSW, at least not today, but fired up the come home warning for regional NSW, which is never promising.

Yep, was just saying to a friend, I’d say that means 1am Wednesday closure, or Thursday at the latest.

If NSW announce triple figures they won't be able to resist the public pressure. Even NSW closed to VIC once it got to triple figures - and Melbourne had a ring of steel.

Today's leaks suggests the number is 110+. Presumably that means 110 - 119.

I predict they already had a lot of these yesterday (post 8pm) which is why she said she would be shocked if it wasn't above 100. So they probably already had 80 or more.

But bringing this back on topic, QLD did say their trigger would be cases outside of Greater Sydney (to date there hasn't been any). I wonder how long they'll continue with that line.

Yes the deputy QLD Premier when talking about NSW border said yesterday was nearly their worst day and if the numbers were worse that would result in more action (which we know it will be worse) so essentially the decision is already made.

Will be interesting to see how NSW results all pan out today and also what happens with Borders now that we have the NRL in QLD

I'm not having a political swipe, but why is he at the press conferences? I know he used to be the health minister but he isn't anymore. I don't know of any other state that brings both the Premier and the Deputy Premier (it's one or the other).

As silly as it sounds from the leaders, there really giving all those in foreign lands (interstate) couple days to get home.
If that was me, I'd say great, lets packup & go home tomorrow, it's really handy short term notice.

Got a trip to OOL next week (from MEL), was via CBR up & SYD on return, changed to direct now. just less hassle, haha as a AFF.
I understand orange & even red zones allow airport transit, but don't want to be grilled unnecessarily by full PPE astronaut folk on landing.

Just hope it hasnt spread in VIC & SA with an infected person travelling...

I hope so too. I'm in VIC with a trip booked for the end of the week and hoping to do another one (not booked yet) next week.
