Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I sincerely hope that she’s taking a few days break from fronting the public. The toll managing this must be immense. Same with GB - she should not also need to front up every day without people casting stones at her absence.

And frankly the crack above re her relationship status was in pretty bad taste. Pretty confident that the same petty remarks would not be made about a male politician to start with. I also hope that she does have someone to go home to at night, to provide her with the support she needs and a safe space to let her guard down.

There is a lot of talk re the impact on the average person’s mental health this lockdown will have. I can’t fathom what it is like for those trying to make the decisions re all of our health, and for those also on the front line.

Yes - maybe it should be framed ‘we are followed the health advice …. That we cherry pick…’
That's the point. Governments do it all the time, with health advice too. I'm sure there is some advice out there that says every third suburb should have its own hospital...

Lost track of the number of times our union has put forward sound medical advise to improve patient ratios (which would have saved plenty of lives) and that was ignored.

To be honest, I find the constant “we’re just following medical advise” to be condescending, at best. It’s not the job of the government to follow the opinion of only one specialty area.

They can’t take her hostage..
In the spirit of Britney…

Free Kerry from the conservatorship of Brad Hazzard!

(If you saw the Legislative Council inquiry you’d know what I mean…)

Seriously I hope that the new restrictions make her more comfortable continuing on and that she is back next week. I’m sure she never intended a role that would require daily media briefings.

Actually it’s often the converse of that.
eg. The health advice is that people are better off going to a large tertiary hospital when they have their stroke/ myocardial infarction/ cancer treatment but the fall out from closing the tiny cottage hospital and consolidating the care is a political minefield so it gets ignored.

The new restrictions today are just minor adjustments - 5km from 10km, single bubble registration, permit to leave Sydney, upto $5000 fines, etc. Sydney still on track for 1000 daily cases - it just going to happen earlier than expected.

I fully accept abd endorse your point ie doctors advise but Govt makes the decision …..
Can only say I feel for Kerry Chant....
I speak from perspective of having provided advice in my past as a doctor to various Comm agencies….
It’s when you are quoted as source for ‘only following health advice’ ….but it’s nothing that actually resembles the health advice you gave (call it as it is ‘we sought but discounted the health advice’)
… I fully acknowledge political decisions are made (as they should be based on best available information and balancing social, ecomonic etc demands)…

I am just providing this perspective that there is a limit to the amount professional nihilism/blame one can withstand before questioning if it’s worth it.

I empathise with everyone in this mess..

I agree NSW will soon be measured in the thousands, but this also means it will spread, it always does. Nature finds a way.

Every state will have COVID and a lot of it by Christmas.

The PM and his pledge to have Christmas open and families together a pipe dream. Easter should be OK though, have faith we will get there for April, but not by end of the year.

I’ve been watching on the sidelines after having decided to no longer participate in Covid discussions here.

I’ve had enough watching what is basically CARP.

I will be unwatching from now. Too many people pretending to be “experts”, looking through a crystal ball and 20/20 hindsight opinions, spouting quotes and links that support one side of another without really looking at the evidence.

I’ll just go back to the hospital Covid coalface where the real “reality” is.

I won’t be replying to private messages about this topic either…

Now to even get NSW daily cases numbers close to 100 in say the next month, NSW would need to stop all "hotspot" LGA activity to just emergency (healthcare, vaccination, fire, police). Please place the food drops at the State border. We know its not going to happen.

Wow alarmist much. Not to mention impractical, stopping essential services like food delivery, mail, garbage collection will create riots and more health issues.

COVID test saga update: family members have been given today off and told to go to a private pathology site on Sunday. This also does not take bookings so still no guarantees.
Aside from the inconvenience, this sort of delay on close contacts is not really good for prompt contact tracing.
I have no first hand knowledge, but apparently the wait time is down to one hour this afternoon at EPIC.
Dramatic drop in COVID-19 test wait times, close contacts prioritised

Oh I agree completely - but that's kind of my point. There will be advice of differing and competing sorts at every turn, but in the end the government decides what to do. And quite often that doesn't match up to the best outcome of care as you quite rightly point out. The nuance here though of course, is that it's not just the patient's outcomes that need to be taken in to account (also the community effects through lockdowns etc)

We have one of the highest funded public health systems in the world paid for by our massive taxes and levies
Yes, it is also the case with our education system where billions poured only see end results decline compare to other countries.
Question is not how much spent. but how efficient those funds are used.
We have plenty of capacity to manage a hell of a lot more than we are now
Unfortunately not.
Even with zero covid system is starched beyond limits.
Major hospitals in covid free WA declaring code yellow and unable to admit patients - this is known fact and that is why WA govt just announced $2 bln raft to hospitals and importing 209 doctors from UK and Ireland.

The failure of Australia’s healthcare system isn’t just in being ill prepared for pandemics. In a 9 June speech at the National Press Club, Australian Medical Association (AMA) President Dr Omar Khorshid described every part of the system as in crisis. He said that waiting times in our hospital emergency departments are the longest they’ve been since 2013, and ambulances are rushing patients to hospital only to have them wait for hours outside the doors. He spoke of the failures of primary healthcare services (the GPs, pharmacists and so on that are usually people’s first contact point with the health system), which are contributing to billions being spent in hospitals to treat patients with preventable conditions.

The AMA’s Public Hospital Report Card 2020 found that public hospital beds per 1,000 people over 65 decreased from around 20 in 2008 to 16 in 2018.

In emergency departments, understaffing, a lack of beds and the associated long waiting times are costing lives—such as that of 7-year-old Aishwarya Aswath, who died at Perth Children’s Hospital on 10 April. Aishwayra's mother tried desperately to get someone to treat her daughter for over two hours while in the emergency waiting area. She died 15 minutes after she was finally seen by a doctor. - that is something you can defiantly expect in Central African Republic but not in first world country.

I can continure on and on with examples...
Again, incorrect. Love your Utopian model.
is DEFINITELY not Utopian. If you haven't experience real life examples of it personally - doesn't mean its not exist, sorry.
Ill just give you example of last country I lived for few years - Korea. All I described above is perfectly real there - fast and efficient. Admitted to hospital twice there.
I can name some more, but you;ll shake your head in disbelieve
I would hardly hold the USA up as a beacon of health success.
not at all. US is even worse then Australia
Overall data doesn't mean a lot
It does, because its only actual numbers and proportions you can really compare with, not just your feelings and expectations.
You lose a lot of credibility by dragging out the "Chinese Virus" line.
wow! that is unexpected!
I am sorry, but I do not much care about my credibility to you or anyone else to be honest.
If you don't like simple reference to particular place where things happened and tend to exaggerate it to something bigger - I cant help with this (

I would be very surprised if we didn't see things soften off at the end of August
Agree, coz level of public compliance will degrade so much following 9 weeks in lockdown that things will soften by itself anyway. They simply dont have choice other then admit inevitable.
locking the state down to make up for government failures is simply not a reasonable response.
It is reasonable but only for the time they can maintain it efficient. And it is not long!
I'll definitely jump on board for a good government bash, The bash is "why has government failed to apply a clear, fact based and logical national plan".
and plan on big scale should be nothing else then fund research of Australia's own vaccine and overhaul national healthcare in preparation for future variants and pandemics.

With respect QS.. that statement is an easy cop out.
So you are a working medico, congratulations.. but you are not God .
An awful lot of cupboard drips under pressure are having their 50c worth here and elsewhere about Covid.
EVERY time a legitimate pro walks away from the process of managing public opinion… the drips trumpet their victory.. and the common folk are the losers.
You could make a difference (and build some personal brownie points ) by taking a page from the screenplay of other respected medico's here and quietly patiently and consistently state the case for science and common sense.

I must have missed that, did Brad Hazzard say that?!

And you will always find singular examples to suit an agenda.

I’ve provided you with the data, just doesn’t suit you.

Ok… not going to waste my time with you 🙄

The way in which this lockdown was announced without any sort of press conference is certainly going down like a lead balloon.

This thread jumped the shark thousands of posts ago. I'm surprised much of the commentary here still gets by the AFF rules, much of it is as political as you can get without being political. And more divisive than many of the now banned political threads ever were. The only reason I stick is the occassional factual post about "Australian Reports of the Virus Thread", but even these are getting drowned in repetitive posting of the same stuff again and again and again.
