'It doesn't make sense': Calls for North Coast NSW three day snap lockdown

Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin is calling for a snap three day lockdown on the North Coast after a man tested positive to COVID-19.

The man in his 50's was admitted to Lismore Base Hospital yesterday, believed to be visiting the Byron Bay region from Sydney.

Ms Saffin says she can't understand why the Premier hasn't imposed a lockdown on the region to protect local residents.

"It doesn't make sense. Why in Tamworth [with] no case and why Lismore where we have someone confirmed at the hospital and has been in the region and no lockdown," Ms Saffin said.
Utterly agree. It does not make sense.

It does not make sense.
Speaking of which:

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has been forced to defend the government’s tough stance on people coming into the state from NSW.

(...)

“We can’t have any more of these incursions, because we know what it means. Even a small number of cases will mean the state’s locked down.”

Indeed, the Vic Premier is saying that when he gets some cases in his state - regardless of where they are from - he goes into lockdown.

The Lismore MP was pointing out a discrepancy from the NSW Premier to particular regions.
One area (Tamworth) has a positive visitor for a day, who leaves and no cases - lockdown.
One area (Byron) has a positive visitor for a number of days, stays and then becomes a case - no lockdown.

I don't see the sense in such decisions.

Edit: from ABC covid blog:

Northern NSW local government areas to go into lockdown from 6:00pm

I’d say it was due to the timing of the cases. They knew about Tamworth yesterday (it was floating around local Newcastle media) but it seems like not much was known about the Lismore man. I think there was also issues doing contact tracing with him as he was in hospital.

Nevertheless at this point it might be simpler to put the whole state in a 14 day lockdown.

Not exactly a lot of notice (1h 20m). Imagine the (maskless) lines at Mullumbimby Woolworths...

Interesting they left out Tweed...wonder what Qld makes of that. Presume the rest of the bubble is a goner.

Interesting that Tweed didn’t get included. I’m assuming Queensland is going to expel these from the border zone (if only during the lockdown) and that will make Tweed an island.

I think it was around August 2020 when the border zone was Tweed, Kyogle, Tenterfield etc west so only the LGAs that have an actual border with Queensland, not the next ones south so they are most likely going to revert to that.

Clarence (Grafton) was included this time around as well by Queensland so they were being generous.

Yes, I was just thinking NSW may have made a deal with QLD to stop them closing the border completely.

I gather it was something like “lock down your LGAs or the border zone is gone”

Clearly some of Federal Government are feeling sidelined and felt it necessary to state the bleedingly obvious that unless NSW gets its numbers down other states will keep their borders closed. I thought it was a bit of hyperbole to suggest it might last past Xmas though, how anyone can possibly extrapolate that far out is beyond me, particularly rom those with no real expertise in the area. Not really adding any value to the analysis.

None of the press conferences add value.

I'm sure there are other questions, but a question which doesn't have a detailed answers is:
- which Sydney restrictions will be lifted - and to what extent (eg which LGAs) (the question of when is already decided as 28 August)

I thought the guy who worked in the ICU was pretty interesting today in the NSW press conference. In fact I think the press were momentary diverted from their attempts to look for headlines and asked some pretty good questions rather than the usual inane repetition of the same questions every day in attempt to catch people out. Normally though, I do sort of agree though I do think we occasionally get some good questions, particularly when they are about medical rather than political aspects.

And it sounds like he is being a jerk with authorities. He has his two kids with him that limits what the police can do with them.
Keep in mind the guy has been admitted to hospital with covid, and NSW doesn’t do that unless it’s serious.

A bit too soon to be throwing spears at him IMO.

Apparently he refused to use QR code check in so I don’t think people will be holding spears back for too long.

That’s changed now outside Sydney.
There are a few people (adults and kids) admitted for precautionary reasons in our current regional outbreak.
Not throwing spears but if someone hasn’t used QR check-in and not able to fully cooperate he is probably safer in hospital in the meantime.
