Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Im still convinced Covid is circulating around SE QLD, our testing is so low, we have the lowest vaccination rates in Australia. Just waiting for it to blow up….
I am absolutely convinced of this as well, which is the main reason I have no confidence in going to the Gold Coast, Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast.

Interesting headline in the NSW Telegraph today. Story is behind a paywall so I can't read it but possible new income stream for some;

NSW residents could be paid for Covid testing, isolation

'Angry' Andrew Clennell leaks that today's number is lower than 239.

Talk about re-inventing the wheel. If it is, as the headline implies, casual workers and the like being paid to get tested and isolate until negative and same group of workers being paid to isolate if positive, the question is why are they not doing that already? One other state learnt that lesson last year.

I know the argument is that each outbreak is different, but is it just hubris that has meant that NSW has to learn for themselves to put in place certain sensible measures to those Victoria did last year?

Of course, it is important to be able to personally source an Almond double latte brewed in the morning sun at an inclination of 37.5 degrees. They're too cold by the time the courier delivers them.

With all these inconsistencies, even with English as your first language, the NSW 'quicksand' rules must be near impossible for others to understand. How many people with low levels of education knew what an LGA was?

Then add in that the rules change every couple of days - miss something and you're lost.

Throw in the incessent 'victim blaming' approach used since the very first case this time around with the limo driver implied to have blatantly flouted the rules/law/requirements driving without a mask etc. Subsequently, very quietly, revealed only after being repeatedly questioned at the media briefings:

  • CCTV showed him wearing a mask before, during, after picking up the FedEx crew
  • FedEx crew tested negative, so were virus shedding & therefore not the source of the outbreak
  • Limo driver complied with requirements & actually exceeded them
  • State Govt had not fully considered what requirements should be & for what they did require were doing no checking to ensure they were being adhered to
More recently it has been the 'gathering' with the people demonised by implication, "Please let me say do not mix with your family..."

Only problem being that the people had not been having some random gathering. It was a funeral for a son who committed suicide. The family followed the State Govt requirements for a Funeral 100%. There were no breaches of any rules, there are no grounds for any fines.

Yet for nearly two weeks Gladys & Brad used them for 'look over here' practise everytime they were questioned about the lockdown rules not being strict enough +/or not working.
There were 50 people in a house.
Tragic circumstances aside that is a direct breach of the current health rules.
No visitors are allowed to the home.

Whilst I’d hope that you are wrong, they do seem to be incredibly ‘lucky’ each time a case crops up.
The real problem is the really low numbers of tests. On a day when NSW had ~ 110000 tests QLD had ~ 16000.QLD has two thirds the population of NSW so adjusting that number it would be ~ 24000 tests.Less than 25% of NSW's total.

As well we have seen cases just pop up randomly. The school pupil is the latest.I saw the QLD Health Minister last night saying QLD had had 13 separate outbreaks in the last 6 weeks.
So unfortunately really does seem likely that covid is bubbling under the surface. They have been incredibly lucky but one super spreader event and things could go downhill rapidly.

Numbers down from that big high, yesterday... thankfully the infectious in the community number also down, but still too high.

NSW recorded 170 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night.
Of these locally acquired cases, 77 are linked to a known case or cluster – 61 are household contacts and 16 are close contacts – and the source of infection for 93 cases is under investigation.

Sixty-five cases were in isolation throughout their infectious period and ten cases were in isolation for part of their infectious period. Forty-two cases were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of 53 cases remains under investigation.

There was no breach of the NSW rules as of the date it was held - Brad Hazzard confirmed this, and closed briefing 2 questions later. T his occured over two weeks ago.

On Sunday (perhaps Monday?) the limit for funerals was finally adjusted down to 10 - yet another case of 'shutting the gate after the(1st) horse has bolted'. Why didn't NSW cut the limit down to ten when this was first announced?

Perhaps it would have shown up yet another case of NSW Govt victim-blaming to divert attention from another NSW Govt failure.

The poor (low socio-economic and tragically impacted) family were permitted to hold a post-funeral gathering. That is what they did, reading between the lines they could not afford to hold it at a commercial venue. This happened following the suicide of a son in early July.

NSW requirements are so lax, as keeps being demonstrated, that it could have been held in a Covid ward.

For example, limo drivers of international aircrew NOT required to be fully vaccinated in NSW in June.

Reason: Pushback from the industry as they argued that with a three month wait between doses for AZ that they would not have any drivers left.

NSW Govt acceded to industry 'advice' and went against the 'medical' advice.

Wrong. Forget what Hazzard said; Here's what was/is allowed in Greater Sydney, for Funerals and gatherings afterwards, and these were revised to the limit of 10, effective from Sunday 11th July 2021. I suspect any comments on it being allowed or not being in breach at that point in time was so that they wouldn't spook any of the attendees from assisting the contact tracers.

Funerals and memorial services

Number of people

A maximum of 10 people can attend a funeral or memorial service or gathering afterwards in Greater Sydney.

The 10 person maximum also applies to an outdoor funeral, memorial service or gathering afterwards. A funeral cannot occur at a place of residence.

In addition to the 10 people attending the service there may also be
  • a person conducting the service
  • other people who are necessary for the preparation and conduct of the service.

Who can attend

Attending a funeral or memorial service is a reasonable excuse to leave home and to enter Greater Sydney including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour.

People from Greater Sydney can only leave their place of residence to attend a funeral, memorial service or gathering afterwards outside of Greater Sydney if they are a spouse (including de facto), parent, child or sibling of the deceased.

Depending on who conducted the service, about 40 people breached the restrictions, and no less than 45 out of the 50 attendees now have the disease and may well end up at a funeral of their own, in due course.

From the 9th July only 10 people at a funeral but I don't know if that included at your house or a funeral place as it is no longer possible from a residence now.

Funerals have been restricted to 10 people since July 11th.
Gatherings at Funerals are not and were not permitted in a private residence.

I think this summary captures all the announced Sydney restrictions - I believe no additional changes announced today. Not an easy read.

Did I hear the police commissioner correctly? Someone who knew he was positive went to work today where there were other workers on site?

For the police to arrive on site, knowing the situation, I wonder who in his circle dobbed him in.

Yes, I believe the worker’s family dobbed the worker in. It happened around 10:30, so not much info before the NSW authorities press conference. BUt suspect all exposed workers will need to isolate for up to 5 days - I believe NSW test and isolate until negative is to test again at day 5

Edit to add ABC blog’s quote

A worker knowingly went to a building site with COVID-19, NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller says

Commissioner Fuller:

"An example this morning, a COVID compliance check, young man who was COVID positive was out of the house and he had gone to work on a building site."

"That sort of behaviour is exactly why we need strong health orders, law enforcement and defence, getting the highest level of compliance."

"This guy knew he was positive. The information is, from his family, that he knew he was positive."
