During the long Melbourne lockdown last year, furniture shops were closed except for click and collect etc

But Victoria always go for strictest settings, whilst other states do more to balance mental health, economic stress and health.

Any lock down under 14 days is to get on top of contrat tracing, not to stop spread, as you need a full incubation period to do that.

Well that is your choice, but why should everyone else stay locked down because you choose to take 6 months (I was proposing another 3 months on top of the 3 months you have already had) to take action?

I'm acting on medical advice. I'm also sure even even I wanted to fork out the extra cash for an early appointment it would be impossible to get as she books up months ahead and has actual cancer to deal with not just the vaccine question.

Who said everyone should stay locked down because of me. There are many many more who are much more vulnerable than me who have been unable to get the jab and may still be a while off getting it..they need to be protected.

I am on a cancer immunotherapy drug trial - the process for getting vaccinated with anything involved seeking approval from the drug company via the trial supervisor who I see once every three weeks. Then coordinating the actual immunisation within a three week treatment cycle and avoiding having the jab at least four weeks prior to a C/T scan due to potential lymph node reactions giving a false positive (which would throw me off the trial). So it took 8-10 weeks to get the first AZ jab. Many on chemo would need to work within similar constraints.

While I strongly support opening up as soon as possible, mostly so young adults can actually have a life, I do find some of the insensitivity about availability of vaccines for those with chronic illness really insulting.

You know nothing of my empathy. My Mum has cancer so I made darn sure she got advice from her gp and oncologist re ability to get vaccinated as soon as 1b opened (i.e. week one) and she got dose one in week 2 and dose 2 in second last week of June.

We need to trust that vaccination will help curb spread and therefore encoruage people to get vaccinated by giving those who are fully vaccinated some domestic movement privileges.

1a and 1b were given priority access (and still have priority access via special quotas at mass vax clinincs), at some point it becomes unreasonable to keep other vaccinated people locked down because some in 1a and 1b havent availed themselves of a vaccination which is available. Its a balancing act of how many people you are harming.

Good to see the businesses who refuse to comply with Covid Health orders re staff and customers wearing masks and registering for a QR code being named and shamed, as well as fined and charged.

The public should not reward these companies with their patronage.

I’m not sure the Queensland Government understands lockdowns.

I am in the 1b group but have not had the vaccine yet due the ineptitude of DHHS. The instructions to Drs and to patients is different so I have been in limbo for the last 3 months. Ie the instructions to Drs said I should go to hospital for my vaccination but the instructions to patients said NO. That being the case I haven’t had anything yet as no hospital would take me.

I was actually given the option of having AZ now, Pfizer when available or even wait for Moderna.

I finally gave up following the mishmash rules and my Dr has agreed that I can have a jab and it’s happening on Tuesday.

The lady who recently had a double mastectomy (cancer) told she gets AZ, because it was a regular cancer, not a blood bourne one. Hubby who survived a burst aorta does qualify, only because of his recent heart attack and on about 17 medications.

That’s sad. . They introduced the email thing about a month ago because staff were having to make decisions as to whether to accept Doctor’s letters without really having the training to do so and then copping a lot of pressure and sometimes abuse. So Doctors now have to email the details and the reasons, so the health team can assess it and then phone and make appointments. Their doctor should have known it, but things have changed so often it’s very hard to keep up.

Its not that they would have thought they were forgeries, but they probably have to follow the protocol, or they can get into trouble.

I have one rather dodgy friend who managed to bully his doctor into writing a letter saying there was a family history of allergy to alcohol. AZ contains alcohol so that was a reason for getting Pfizer. While he genuinely has a brother who has an allergy to alcohol, he himself has knocks back alcohol regularly. Fortunately before he could go any further with this ploy, they changed the rules for under 60s so now he is legitimately booked in for Pfizer in a couple of weeks.

I think with that sort of thing going on it was very had for them. When I had my AZ at Garran the staff were copping a huge amount of abuse from someone in his 70s who was demanding Pfizer.

The contact with QLD Health with respect to a reported hot spot has been abysmal. They have not even made direct contact, despite listing me on their contact tracing website. On ringing 13COVID you are affronted with a guy reading from a script, who has no further information as to opening, isolation, cleaning etc. It has taken a week for the QLD contract tracers to track this position and there is no support or information whatsoever. (Apolitical and non-divisive post)

So yes if fully vaccinated in April it will have been Pfizer. Two residents at Arcare who caught Covid also had been given Pfizer.

(Note once again that the vaccines do not necessarily mean that people will not get infected. There are plenty of reports in both the US and the UK of vaccinated people still becoming infected. But yes outcomes are for the vast majority,though not all, much improved)

NSW Health identified a student nurse tested positive on the evening of Tuesday June 29. This case was announced on Wednesday as she had worked whilst infectious at Fairfield and RNSH. Testing of close contacts of this case identified an additional eight cases across 3 linked households. Of those cases, five worked in aged care and healthcare, two had worked at Summit Care Baulkham Hills while infectious, one worked at Royal North Shore Hospital, Royal Ryde Rehab hospital and Fairfield Hospital whilst infectious.​

If I'm ever in a quarantine situation and I hear a fire alarm going off, I'll evacuate immediately. I frankly don't care what the advice of management or emergency services are. An alarm is an alarm and should be treated as such. I can think of other incidents (e.g. Grenfell Towers) where residents advised not to evacuate with tragic consequences. If you cop a fine, so be it, no magistrate will uphold such a fine anyway. Things like stay-at-home and quarantine rules are just that, rules, they aren't absolutes that must always be followed there are always exceptions.

A lot of it really depends on when you got the jab and how aggressively you pursued it. I was fortunate as someone in their 30s in Phase 1b having gotten my first jab of AstraZeneca on April 3, a mere days before ATAGI changed the guidelines for who can get the jab. Had I waited much longer I would've likely been forced to get the Pfizer jab and wait for a vaccine which likely is not a good fit for my circumstances. And I'm not an ordinary person, I have degrees in Computer Science and know the ins and outs of how to navigate the information space to book a COVID jab in record time.

I would encourage those on the forum to think of aunt Edna in her 70s who whilst she qualifies for the jab, doesn't have access to all the information and resources we have. So far as I can tell the government has done nothing to reach out to us in the high priority group. You needed to know you were in that group and discover what steps you can take to get the jab. At the same time, the data we're seeing from vaccinations points out that still, a large number of high-priority people (phase 1a and phase 1b) haven't gotten the jab yet. Why the commonwealth isn't actively pursuing those most vulnerable (aside from those in nursing homes) is beyond me!

Combine this with the misinformation being put out by the Premiers of states such as Queensland regarding who can get what vaccine and is it any wonder that people are hesitant about getting vaccines? Why would a nurse in her 20s bother getting the AstraZeneca jab if the Chief Health Officer says COVID is no big deal for them (despite the collateral damage they can cause to vulnerable patients)?

The other possibility is the vaccine is less efficacious on that patient. The figures we see in reports are averages. People such as yours truly who are immunocompromised, whilst fully vaccinated may still have a significant risk for catching and developing complications from COVID. In which case we have to wait a couple of weeks after getting fully vaccinated to get blood tests to tell us how effective those vaccines are and depending on the outcome, get booster shots until the immune response is deemed sufficient. For those curious here's a webinar UCSF Medical had on this very topic. Even then, some patients won't have sufficient immunity and will need to rely on herd immunity from the community to be protected.

In any event, it should be pretty darn clear that anyone working in healthcare or anything adjacent to medical such as nursing homes needs to be vaccinated right now. Patients need to know that if they go to the hospital for routine treatment they won't end up on a ventilator because nurse Karen didn't get her COVID jab.
