Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

On the plus side Dr CHant (NSW CHO) just stated the 65yo female cleaner diagnosed with Covid-9 today was wearing a mask whilst on public transport, so that will hopefully have significantly reduced the risk of her infecting fellow commuters.

Also stated that she did not have any direct contact with quarantined travellers, so they suspect more likely someone else at the hotel who does have traveller contact is likley an asymptomatic carrier and likely passed it onto the cleaner.

If this is true hope they find that person quickly and that they likewise have been masked when cmmuting or shopping.

The old QLD linking clock of 48 hours only has 24 more hours to run....

I wonder if QLD will shut to NSW again... after 3 days open.... surely not....

How so, the test result was only notified at 2am this morning - Qld couldnt have known about the case before NSW Health did. Shoudl have until 2am Saturday to link it.

I thought it was on the news earlier.... Anyway Queenslanders don’t work weekends ;)

There’s no way at one case Queensland will close. Now the election is done the economy is the priority and the TV ads are booked. The premier also knows how important Christmas is to a lot of her constituents and seeing family is important - closing would be toxic.

Queensland has already said they’re not closing the borders. Stop the scaremongering, you’re as bad as the media.

Im the one terrified - we have family reunion holidays locked and loaded across multiple of these blasted state borders.

And forgive me if I don’t believe a word the QLD leaders say. I watch what they do instead.

They also have not said they are not closing the borders, they have said they will act on the advice from our very very conservative state CHO up here who has tremendous form in this area....

Which is why I’m praying NSW make the link the 48 hour period so we don’t have ANY excuses to shut again.

Really really hope you are right.

Also the 48 hour rule is not a thing. Additionally the criteria for closing the border is not the same as it was to open the border.

We can’t be living life freaking out about single cases otherwise covid will be the least of our worries.

That's good for you to say

With my entire family in WA I can assure you I am most certainly freaking out about single cases of COVID due to the actions of the state government there.

Its funny isn’t it....

...I’m not actually freaking out about single cases whatsoever - I’m not actually that fussed about the virus, period in Australia.

I’m freaking out at the state governments freaked out border responses to cases!

Same boat - we have to get family across to WA too...

If the WA CHO advises closed borders based on one case he will lose a lot of credibility as all the commentary from epidemiologists in Australia have lined up today and said the borders being closed with this amount of cases is not a proportionate response anywhere, to anyone domestically right now.

There are also many forums on Facebook where people are already just flying to QLD then onto WA and just lying saying they haven’t been in NSW and there isn’t anything WA can do..... I’m not advocating that this is the right thing to do at all, just pointing out that even if they did decide to keep NSW out how on earth do they stop people transiting through basically any other state?

Its pretty amazing for a “pandemic” isn’t it. I’m the same, could not care less about a virus that I’ve personally got a 99.99999% chance of recovery from. It’s the hysteria from the general public and subsequently politicians that concerns me.

NSW have not been testing quarantine staff:

Mandatory testing of staff at quarantine hotels still not in place

Urgent genome sequencing and contact tracing continue after a south-west Sydney woman who worked at a quarantine hotel contracted COVID-19.

The woman, who worked at the Novotel and Ibis hotels in Darling Harbour from Friday, November 27, to Monday, did not have direct contact with infected overseas quarantine patients.

It has also been revealed mandatory testing of all staff is yet to be rolled out across all Sydney quarantine hotels.

NSW Health told the ABC it was still working to implement weekly testing at its police-run hotels.

A health alert to self-isolate and be tested has been issued for people who travelled at particular times by light rail between Convention and Central and by train between Minto, Lidcombe and Central between the Friday and Monday.

What is the average Joe Blow supposed to do when the most at risk of creating the next wave aren’t even being tested. Yet all the time they bang on Test Test Test. When will we learn?

When the vaccine can be taken in Australia the first priority should be ALL workers who may have direct or indirect contact areas that International Arrivals go through or will be quarantined at.

ie Airport, customs, transport (airport to HQ), all workers at HQ (from the cleaners, cooks on up to the police and health workers).

This is the highest risk group for if they get infected, then others may. Chop that off then an outbreak is less likely (ie seaports and aircrew).

Only after that should come aged care, the health compromised, healthcare workers etc.

As someone who has been travelling throughout most of this year, I have to agree. I've found the border saga highly counter productive to good practices. In the early stages, I was very particular about sanitising, wiping things down and generally being COVID concious. I was organised and efficient.
Once the borders really kicked off, my priority became keeping up with the paper-work and monitoring the frequent changes in requirements. The virus sort of faded into the background! I think it's a risk with any system that becomes too nit picking with rules. People focus on the rules, not the reasons for the rules.

6 days of zero cases now in SA. Only 270 odd in quarantine down from 5000 a week ago. We may just have escaped second wave. Relaxations at pubs now back to 1 in 2 but must be seated so venues back to 50% capacity. Everyone hopeful of big announcement on 14 December.

I think health care workers must also be in the priority group. Those dealing with potential walk ins who may have Covid. And those working with positive cases. If we bump up first line of defence then I agree that there is much less chance of it getting in to the community.
