Certain parts of the media really going after Brett Sutton now. In depth investigation into Cedar Meats it seems, looking to emails around it dated late April. No one seems to have looked so deep into what happened in aged care though. Can but wonder why.

She does not seem to focus on the negative aspects of Federal Government areas.

More on the Croxton School Cluster.

The Mother was evidently the first positive test, so then the family of 4 was all tested. They’re all positive. The two children are students at East Preston Islamic College and Croxton.

In the Vic Presser it was stated that this cluster was not yet linked to the two other EPIC transmission families, who are also not yet linked to each other.

The positive case at Croxton school is a student, they are part of a family of four, and all four of the family are positive, Jeroen Weimar said.
One of the family’s other children attends the East Preston Islamic College, but it is not clear whether the cases are connected. The two children attended school while infected on one day.

FOUR MEMBERS OF ONE FAMILY TEST POSITIVE
Four members of the one family have tested positive, with one child attending Croxton School and another child attending East Preston Islamic College.

The child attended the Croxton School for one day after his mother tested positive, but before testing positive himself.

Similarly, the other child attended East Preston Islamic College on Monday despite being a close contact of a positive cases.

Both schools will be closed for two weeks.

Of the four new Preston area cases, one is a student at the East Preston Islamic College.

Both schools will remain shut for the next fortnight to minimise any potential spread of the virus.

“In addition, we are testing a number of secondary close contacts at Sirius College and Ilim College,” the DHHS said.

“They are connected to separate close contacts who will be tested again over this weekend.”

The Croxton school is a government run Prep - Year 12 facility based in Northcote that caters for students with mild intellectual disabilities.

101 close contacts from the East Preston Islamic College have been identified, and are quaranting.

One case has been confirmed at Croxton School, with 34 close contacts quarantining.

She does not seem to focus on the negative aspects of Federal Government areas.

She? Oh, perhaps you mean Peta Credlin ("she who will not be named") - the "non journalist" who single-handedly brought the issue of phone records into the open# and resulted in the resignation of the Premier's Department Secretary and has made the position of Professor Sutton so very precarious.

# the inquiry only asked for them after Credlin's asking Premier Andrews if he would voluntarily submit his

Credlin has been an excoriating critic of the Morrison government for ages, including on aged care. As I think you've mentioned you don't subscribe to the Oz, you wouldn't have seen references to this ( I don't have Sky, so only see the second-hand reports).

Peta Credlin's training is in the law.She has been reading all the transcripts from the Coates Inquiry plus the documents lodged with the Inquiry.Sutton is in her sights as he testified that he only knew about private security in May.Yet there was an email on 27th March informing him of the decision and he replied to it.He then instructed the DHHS lawyers not to send that email to the Inquiry saying it was not relevant.
Lying to the Inquiry can mean 12 months behind bars.
I believe she has an article in today's Australian detailing a lot of what she has found.

Just did a quick google on Peta and Aged Care (as yes I do not have a subscription to The Australian and I do not watch her show) and it seems that Peta herself was involved with Aged Care being what it is today, and so yes she is probably well placed to know how poor government (as in politicians and their staff) performance can lead to major stuff ups.

Senator Fierravanti-Wells reveals a crucial policy change at the end of 2013 that dumped a reform plan in favour of shifting aged care from one federal department to another, wasting staff and resources.
She says a "revolving door" of ministers, which she blames on Mr Abbott and his "then-powerful chief of staff, Peta Credlin", led to instability and inertia.
"In short, Prime Minister Abbott and those advising him in the Coalition failed in their promise to reform aged care and simply opted for a shift that had no demonstrable positive outcome for the wellbeing of our older Australians," she writes.
"Rather, all it did was suck up valuable resources that ought to have been better utilised in frontline aged care services rather than this futile bureaucratic exercise.

And having a bias, does not have to mean that one is wrong. But if biased one may choose to pursue particular matters, or lines of inquiry and ignore others.

Today's Vic DHHS Report is now out. Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria – 24 October 2020

There is I believe additonal material in it on the six linked new cases today including that
  • one is a staff member from Estia Keilor
  • two are parents from East Preston Islamic College (see bolded below). Comment: Is does not indicated to which transmission chain that they are linked to though.

Some salient extracts are below:

Media release
24 October 2020

The Department of Health and Human Services is working to contain an outbreak of coronavirus in Melbourne’s northern suburbs with more than 9,400 tests completed since Tuesday.

Extensive contract tracing and community engagement is underway including a door knocking program providing information in a range of languages, community meetings, information stalls and enhanced testing.

Residents in Dallas, Roxburgh Park, Broadmeadows, Preston and West Heidelberg who have even the mildest of symptoms are being encouraged to get tested for coronavirus.

All East Preston Islamic College and Croxton School families and staff are encouraged to get tested at any testing centre in Melbourne, immediately even if they do not have symptoms, and stay home until they receive their results. Both schools will remain closed for the next two weeks.

There is now a drive through testing centre operating at the East Preston Islamic College.

......

The Royal Children’s Hospital will set up a testing site at the Croxton School for staff and families from tomorrow. Additional pop-up testing sites will also be announced in the coming days.

In addition, we are testing a number of secondary close contacts at Sirius College and Ilim College. They are connected to separate close contacts who will be tested again over this weekend.

Victoria has recorded seven new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 20,336.

The overall total has increased by six due to one case being reclassified.

......

Six of today’s seven new cases are linked to known outbreaks and cases. One is a close contact already identified as part of the Hoppers Crossing community outbreak and was already in quarantine and one is a staff member from Estia Keilor. One is a student from East Preston Islamic College, one is a student from Croxton Special School, also linked to East Preston Islamic College through family and two are parents from East Preston Islamic College.

The remaining case is a previously positive case that is currently under investigation.

Of today’s seven new cases, there are three cases in Darebin, and single cases in Banyule, Greater Dandenong, Maribyrnong and Wyndham.

Given that three of the cluster/outbreaks today

had a link (though not evidently a transmission link) to EPIC, but are not yet directly linked, I wonder how quickly the genomic sequencing can be rushed through to see if these cases have a common ancestor a small number of transmission generations back through community spread, or whether it is more just coincidence and they have a much older lineage?

In any case hopefully all the "third ring" measures including asymptomatic testing will mop up the existing other infections including any unknown infections outside of normal close contacts. That along with the normal general symptomatic testing program.

The other clusters/outbreaks all seem to be contained even if they are having new cases still.

<snip> No one seems to have looked so deep into what happened in aged care though. Can but wonder why.

There is a Royal Commission into Aged Care going on, including re the pandemic response. I'd say that's a deep look, so stay tuned.

Ha ha. Such as in the case of your example, the SMH, devoting coverage to a rival who upstaged their 'professional' journalists on the phone records issue. :) . And also per your other example, yes, Credlin has experience within government and in systems such as health and aged care, so does know how to get at where the skeletons might be and can investigate with much more authority. Leaving others just to throw rocks in frustration.

How funny that the modelling they did was bang on - they’ve hit their less than 5 rolling average! Great news.

Will be interesting to see how the northern outbreak response is going when they debrief.

Yes for cv19 modelling as I posted recently it has been amazingly accurate.

EDIT. The daily confirmed case Table was evidently updated, but in slightly different spot (Once up it is not live updated during the day). Zero contact with a confirmed case is not a good initial figure, but again that will have been as of about 8am and so zero just means no immediately obvious links. When initial case interviews are completed this will probably increase. (People may not have answered the phone etc first thing this morning). Certainly I hope it increases and at 10.30 it should be updated in the Vic Presser. If still zero by then then that would not be good for substantially eased restrictions.

Yesterday the 4 went up to 6 by the Vic Presser.

Vic Presser. Good news. Today's 7 cases have now all been linked to cases. 6 are now linked to outbreak and 1 to a healthcare worker. So that is good news. Obviously the interviews went well :)

Restriction announcement delayed till tomorrow for Metro Melbourne so that an additional 1000 test results from swabs already taken in the northern suburbs can be processed.

Additional easings for Rural Vic are announced today though.

Tests results down from the last several days, but that is quite common that weekend test numbers drop from weekday levels.

Isn’t it possible to open up the rest of Melbourne but keep a lockdown on the Northern Suburbs, like the did between metro and rural? I know they tried it before and it didn’t work, but they were pretty useless at test and trace then, whereas now they seem good. Very sad for the rest of Melbourne :(

2 staff member at Regis Macleod Aged Care have tested positive. All other 108 residents and staff have been tested and have come back negative.

Note from 23 October.
23 October 2020
Regis Aged Care confirms that a staff member at Regis Macleod has tested positive today for COVID-19. We understand that this result is linked to the recent East Preston College outbreak. The staff member last worked at Regis Macleod on Wednesday 21 October. As a precaution, effective immediately, Regis has implemented our Outbreak Management Plan for Regis Macleod. The Regis Outbreak Management Plan is rigorous and includes extensive infection prevention and control measures.

We have notified the Department of Health and Human Services, the Victorian Public Health Unit and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission of this test result. Testing of all residents and employees at Regis Macleod will take place on Saturday 24 October in the afternoon.

The staff member will not return to work until they are well and have met the strict conditions set by the Australian Government and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). We will continue to support the staff member as they isolate at home.

Regis takes the safety and wellbeing of its residents and staff seriously. Our ongoing focus is providing support to our residents, their families and staff.

If we have good systems in place that is exactly how we have to manage this moving forward.
