Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

From today's Vic Presser by Dan Andrews.

Hallam family cluster (Casey) is now at 40 cases (So I am guessing 6 of today's 14).

EDIT; Just to note that the Vic DHHS report which came out much later in the day at 5.20PM now has this as 43. Plus they have a comment that 5 cases under investigation had dropped from 5 to 2.

As public health work is undertaken throughout the day, outbreak totals are likely to change as the public health team identify links between cases and identified outbreaks, which is why there are now only two cases under investigation, as opposed to five this morning.

NSW 2 cases, one in quarantine and one locally acquired - assume taxi driver and part of Liverpool Hospital cluster, and 1 death.....sigh

Did they actually name the family? I haven’t been keeping up with this, but I certainly hope they haven’t named to shame them - I can’t see how that helps anything.

I see they said the case had the Covid safe app and they were using it for contact tracing...
Yes, no new information since last night’s public health alert.

I don’t believe so - just the Afghan community and they have since apologised for that. The CHO was more trying to say he was happy to talk to them, because of his Afghan experience rather than outing them.

Qld matching NSW new cases, though of course the historical case profile is a bit different

2 cases, one in quarantine and one locally acquired linked to Wacol corrective services cluster, 19 active cases.

WA 1 case

The new case – a 13-year-old male – returned to Perth from overseas, is a close contact of a confirmed case, and is in hotel quarantine.

While they obviously broke "the rules" and that is more than unfortunate.

I can see why the gov is treading lightly with no condemnation and significant encouragement to come forward. It appears from the scant info around, an extended family in low paid jobs that were using other family members for child care.

They have never named any of the families in any of the family clusters since the pandemic started.

The only identification is that each family cluster is normally named after the location of patient 0 in each cluster.

ie the H&M employee cluster later became the Northern Melbourne Cluster after it was identified that the family cluster formed before the H&M store transmission.

For Vic Clusters over 10 see below (Casey Cluster is now 40 as 6 more cases today) you can see quite a number of the Family Clusters.

Personally I think a big factor in the Second Wave really gaining momentum back in June in Victoria was a mixture of people not presenting for testing, and when they did many not isolating.

So given this one can understand why it is critical to not foster an environment when people will not present for testing because they may be fearful of the fines for them and their close contacts.

The first time they did that we are all well and truly up the proverbial.

Why would anyone go to get tested or cooperate with contact tracers if there was any chance whatsoever your family name was going to be splattered over the evening news?

Whether they had broken any rules or not, you can just imagine the haters and trolls all over social media, attacking other family members at work, haters outside businesses etc. Would turn out a horrendous mess.

I understand that in Victoria as long as you were exercising, then even as covid positive you could be out in public. That was stopped under more recent restrictions, thank goodness.

If they were exercising it would most likely have not been a problem. Also they were meant to maintain 1.5m and wear a facemask.
The problem you get is that some may use it as a loophole to do other things where there may have been contact.

This is why most of us here in Melbourne support the curfew, even though many interstate seem to find it objectional. There is no reason to be out then anyway, it makes it harder for people seek a loophole, and makes the task of police and others a lot easier. So the curfew is only really an inconvenience to people wanting to do the wrong thing.

So yes rules need to be as simple as possible with as few loopholes as possible. Self-isolation was and still is mainly an honesty system. But yes good that the exercise loophole was removed, but once again is an example how the dishonest minority have penalised the honest majority.

The level of doorknocking has been commented on being a worthwhile measure, as opposed to just checking by phone.

PS:
The main isolation breaches that have been reported to have been a problem were people who still attended work, or visited other households.
Also the "deliquent" rate turned out to be lower as some addresses were wrong and some of those "not at home" turned out to have been but were out in the garage, in the shower etc.

The verified VIC DHHS reported was out late today.

Salient points extracted and bolding is my bolding.:

Media Release
20 September 2020
Victoria has recorded 14 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 20,042.
The overall total has increased by eight due to six cases being reclassified.
This is the lowest number of new cases since 19 June, when we reported 13 cases in the past 24-hour period.
Within Victoria, 12 of the new cases are linked to outbreaks or complex cases and two are under investigation.

As public health work is undertaken throughout the day, outbreak totals are likely to change as the public health team identify links between cases and identified outbreaks, which is why there are now only two cases under investigation, as opposed to five this morning. So of of 14 new cases for the day, 9 are from this cluster.

So a max of two unknown community spread cases, and this may be less as contact tracing is underway.

The total number of cases from an unknown source in the last 14 days is 52 for metropolitan Melbourne and zero for regional Victoria. The 14-day period for the source of acquisition data ends 48 hours earlier than the 14-day period used to calculate the new case average due to the time required to fully investigate a case and assign its mode of acquisition.
So 52 in 14 days is an average of 3.7 per day.

Non-aged care outbreaks with the highest number of active cases include:
  • 30 active cases are currently linked to the Casey community outbreak (total cases: 43) My Comment: Note this morning this was said to 40. So the 3 cases discussed above would seem to have linked to this cluster
  • 14 active cases are currently linked to Footscray Hospital (total cases: 16)
  • 6 active cases are currently linked to Wydinia Kindergarten (total cases: 16)
  • 6 active cases are currently linked to Dandenong Police Station (total cases: 17)
  • 6 active cases are currently linked to the Alfred Hospital (total cases: 7)
Organisation based outbreak totals include contacts as well as employees/residents/staff/students of that location/business.

Deaths:

There have been five new deaths from COVID-19 reported since yesterday. Two men in their 80s, two women in their 80s and one woman in their 90s. All five deaths occurred prior to yesterday. One previous death was reclassified, resulting in a net increase of four deaths since yesterday.
All of today’s five deaths are linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities. To date, 761 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.
