Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

And I think that is likewise being addressed too with a gaol sentence for deliberate avoidance of quarantine.

Update: all four had a negative covid and they are being kicked out of the state by end of the day. And the Premier is furious with the Magistrate who let them off scott free. Hence the fine for not complying. Oh well, at least we dont have to house them in gaol.
But wasn’t the magistrate asking for a gaoling power rather than fining power?

which is better goal (for say 1 month) or quarantine then kick out immediately? (It’s more a rhetorical question)

Interesting:

However, overall only three in 10 people testing positive for COVID-19 show any symptoms at all.

The % seems to vary with every study. Though that is on the low side. I have seen lower though. Only 4% in one cohort of prisoners.

A number that I have looked at indicate that many have very mild symptoms , but that people did not really appreciate they did. So how well the data is gathered and the people questioned rather than just surveyed may play a role.

But yes it was the advice of some is to act as is everyone else is infected. Particularly is community spread is about.

Man from NSW became infectious within 24 hours

ABC News

"We have received some additional advice from New South Wales about at least one person who appears to have become infectious within 24 hours of being infected with COVID-19.

"The advice from infectious disease experts and the AHPPC is that while this is unusual, it is not implausible.

"There is a wide distribution in the incubation period for COVID-19 and the time that people become and remain infectious.

"People usually develop symptoms within five to seven days of infection but may be infectious one or two days before the symptoms develop.

"As we see large numbers with COVID-19 infected, in Australia, we are starting to see examples of people with early infectivity."

From 12 noon today anyone in the ACT who visited the Crossroads Hotel, Planet Fitness or the Picton Hotel during the problem period is legally required to self isolate for 14 days from the date they were there and also encouraged to get tested even if they have no symptoms.

Kick out immediately agreed on a practical level. But it hardly sends the message to others thinking the same. And they got caught. Others might think they won’t be.

She attended the police waiting at the airport gate and was tested on the spot and taken by individual transport to iso.

The context of my reference was on 14 day quarantine being adequate to control the infection period when there are no symptoms. I mentioned the British woman for two reasons:
1/ She did not complete the 14 days
2/ There was a media furore at the time that the quarantine was bungled in Victoria.

As I understand it:
1/ She made herself known to airport authorities and was then escorted out by police. (ie police were not waiting for her, but they responded to her seeking them out as she was expecting to be met but wasn't)
2/ As they were not expecting her, SA authorities initially took to the media saying Victorian officials did not tell them when the woman would arrive. Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier apologised and said an email had been sent but had been overlooked

If that was so, I will stick with but SA authorities did not quite handle her arrival ok as being accurate for if they had of there would not have been a story, and certainly no media furore.

Anyhow, by way of update:

It looks like NSW is refusing to lockdown the Sydney metro. Hopefully it’s first 3 under investigation cases in quite some time are not a first insight into tertiary or later infections from patient zero at Crossroads Hotel (ie from Melbourne)

ACT had a handful of cases derived from Melbourne and is seemingly now controlled. Now just waiting to see if there is any backwash from the Crossroads Hotel outbreak.

I haven’t been following regional Victoria that closely but there have been no real political indications that they are contemplating any change in settings which indicates the number of new cases is not of major concern.

Thankfully the other States and Territories have not that many cases flowing from the Melbourne outbreak, just more incidents of breaching border/quarantine orders than anything else.

Police met/meet people at the gate for relevant interstate arrivals. She had no choice but to see them. You have to line up and give your details before you can move into the terminal proper. Yes they had not read the email, so in that sense they weren't expecting her. However their procedures are such that she was always going to be captured so their back up process is excellent and that was also highlighted in the press conference however that didnt make the headlines as sexy as saying that they hadnt read the email so of course it wasnt reported and not known unless you watched the media conference.

Please dont make the mistake of assuming the media reports the truth in its entirety, just the bit that makes for a good header.

ADFA trainee officers returning for the new semester will be unable to leave base til the 29th July as a precaution. Any returning from Victoria will be accommodated separately.

I thought they already had tertiary infection from Crossroads...

And what assumption are you referring to? What in my post was not accurate and where did I go with a header that you refer to?

As I understand the first reports were about a Victorian quarantine failure. Spurrier did publicly apologise for mistakes including the incorrect information about Victoria and that the transiting quarantined person arrived unknown, stated that there were close contacts at the airport (not just the flight), and that following this that protocols would be altered. Those close contacts at the airport arose from the British woman not being treated as a quarantined person in transit till she flagged herself as being so.

If yes to these points, that I would believe stating that not handling her arrival quite right is an accurate and reasonable comment. Or did Spurrier change things that did not need changing, and apologise for no reason?

And again my key point was that the quarantined woman did not actually serve the 14 days quarantine period, and so was not an example of 14 days being an inadequate duration to quarantine people to control transmission. She had spent about a week in quarantine in Victoria after arriving in Australia from the UK and had tested negative while in quarantine. She was released early from the Victorian quarantine with approval from SA and Vic authorities for compassionate reasons and flight details sent to the SA authorities. She wore a mask while travelling to SA and made herself known to airport authorities and was then escorted out by police. When tested again, she returned the positive result.

I was not "having a go at SA" and so if you took it that way I apologise.
Mistakes happen and the Vic Security Guard Fiasco is about as big as you can go. This one in SA was tiny and hence not quite right.

Anyway, there has been some tertiary but as noted very limited and being as I understand the example a close contact of a household member of a positive (and the household member being positive as well), it makes this type of tertiary ‘acceptable’.

I feel a tertiary of an unknown positive is what I am thinking of as being more worrying.

Thinking of another example - perhaps unnecessarily creating things out of thin air - just another ‘patient zero’ from Melbourne or a secondary infection from a different unknown patient zero would of course be worrying. But this scenario feels quite tangential and less likely in reality since the hard border closure earlier in this month.

Perhaps poor/imprecise wording on my behalf

All those people wandering around saying just a little flu that effects oldies 🙄

Chronic flu like symptoms are a complication of many viral illnesses and even after the Flu.It is very common after EBV infection-Glandular Fever and with EBV it was first reported several hundred years ago.
Usually referred to as the Chronic Fatique Syndrome It is a definite disorder and there is no test to prove it. So can be taken advantage of.It generally eventually resolved.Thought to be immunologically mediated as we do use some compounds that are produced with infections such as Interferon. It's common side effect is fatique and body pains.
So this report does not mean Covid is necessarily causing some new disease or is persistent.
