Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I’m not a doctor so my understanding isn’t great, but I’m somewhat perplexed as to how our death rate is so low. 7 (one of whom was nearly 100 years old) seems very out of step with other countries who are struggling.

Could be a lot of things, really...

a) we're just lucky and most people who caught it happened to have mild versions
b) we are still in the stage where we have enough resources to look after everyone (look at South Korea's rates where most people received proper care vs Italy where the health system is completely overrun)
c) There are several strains evolving and we are getting the one that is less deadly
d) The virus is less deadly in Summer for some reason
e) other countries may have people getting the virus + some other pathogen (like cold/flu viruses) which is exacerbating the symptoms

There is definitely not a lack of drug/vaccine development going in the ground. Word is our company is putting bids in to run some COVID clinical trials...

Yes N860CR, the death rate % are hard to get your head around.
China 3-4%, Italy 7-9%, then Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, Denmark & Australia are less than 1%. Although Australia was at 3% the same as USA a week or so ago.

The Italian death rate was low 4 weeks ago as was the British 2 weeks ago
One positive thing is that the Australian death toll is not rising quickly-I sincerely hope this is a reflection that it will behave differently here
There is a huge amount of trepidation within the health services at present-it would be marvellous if those fears were not fully realised

The statistics of these are very difficult to interpret
It depends heavily on the testing strategy (lots of tests(as in Germany)=low fatality rate) and the age profile (older frailer population=higher death toll)
Only when there is a scientific study of how many in each country were infected (with convalescent antibody tests) will we know proper age-adjusted death rates

I hadn’t thought of that. There’s quite a few people whose main social activity is going to the coffee shop, even if it’s only to read the paper and have a cup of coffee. Some of course catch up with their mates. Some people sit there for quite awhile doing the crossword.

At least the cafe owners will no longer be complaining that they can only buy 2 bottles of milk at a time.

Cut and paste from a Bernard Salt article in The Australian.... really interesting article.

You been following us? Coffee, toastie and a crossword is a daily ritual for us.

SMH quick crossword, can't get my head around a cryptic, mind you some of David Astle's quicks are verging on cryptic.

When you’re in lockdown, you’ll be able to spend the months learning the art of cryptic crosswords. ;)

Advised this evening full lockdown in Germany with massive on the spot fines.
So that's lock downs in:
New York
New Jersey
California
Washington (state)
Italy
France
Spain
Germany
Bangkok
Manila
Denmark
Belgium
El Salvador
Peru
Malaysia

So according to the rather good press conference this evening by PM and CMO all retail remains open.

Basically any place of social gathering e.g. casino, worship, cinema, pub, club, gym etc is closed from midday and expected to remain so for at least 6 months.

It was reaffirmed that retail remains open.

So shame on the fools who panic stampeded Dan Murphys.

Hopefully we can try and support our bricks and mortar retailers over the coming weeks.

So what do people do if they need groceries?

I secured a Woolies choc mud cake but what about day #2?

The message tonight at the national cabinet meeting must have been very compelling, it seems to have turned a couple of rogue states.

Do you think it was something like - 97% will be fine, do we cripple 100% for 3%...
