Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Hopefully at the end of this week Anna opens the border to Sydney Metro, SA and all of Victoria on the 1 December.

And maybe the states need to move the panic button further away from the state premiers.
perhaps Vic and to a lesser chance SA (Qld still have not recanted the 28 day requirement they specified soon after putting up border to SA/Adelaide) but does Sydney even have a chance giveneveything that’s been on the table/said in public-less than 1% chance really lol

To keep the nation split up over Xmas and to continue to trap your own residents in your state preventing them from seeing family in the two biggest states, which have had zero cases for weeks now will be incredibly incredibly hard to justify.

The 28 day method is utterly flawed because ironically the longer the two big states go with no cases, the higher chance that the next 1-2 cases that bubble up WILL be a mystery case. NSW has been hit with this issue multiple times now.... it’s been designed to fail them...

I’m very well aware QLD is making random rules up on the run, we have the least qualified CHO to even make these decisions in the first place, denying true compassionate exemptions yet waiving through footy players etc etc.

Regardless of past performance....I’m just praying that this week they CALM down and act more rationally, with an ounce of compassion for what we are all going through.

WA should also be doing the same but they appear even more hopelessly transfixed with their appointment looming in March and let’s face it by all the numbers they are far less important to Australia than QLD.

I think it’s because Tas seems to be in the Qld/WA bucket- moving to close border before SA went to hard lockdown and now not reopening as soon as SA removes lockdown.

PS in case you missed it @nutwood confirmed hard lockdownwas announced on Wednesday
Yes. I llive in Adelaide and have listened live each day. On Wednesday as the announcement started I sat in the garage incredulous as the move from a soft (that started Monday) to a hard lockdown and immediately drove to the shops to get some supplies. Not toilet paper. Even while the announcements were underway the queues to our basic 24/7 store that is expensive, became gridlocked. I also contacted the DIL who has a baby to check they would be fine.

IMHO whilst (if it comes to that) it is unfortunate that some people can’t travel interstate for Christmas but it’s really not the end of the world.
Our niece who likely won't have her husband here now for her and her kids this year if he can't rebook his flight into Adelaide from France that was cancelled last week, then we are all she has. Currently the limit on households would preclude her from seeing her immediate Family members. Of course Christmas doesn't mean the same for everyone but for those who care about it, I can understand why there is a great focus on it.

Queenslanders are welcome in the rest of NSW - looks like if they want to see family they will need to do the travelling.

I’m sure the NSW government isn’t too upset about the rapid growth in tourism in NSW that comes from being pragmatic about borders.

Per the other responses, it may be about ‘Christmas’ in itself for some, but Christmas is really a massive lightning rod for everything else now, the months and months we have been split apart across the country, the nonsensical approach to state borders etc.

Many many Australians use the summer break to catch up with interstate family, and even more so this year given border restrictions have prevented many from doing so throughout the year. It’s second only to Easter for family reunification travel.

And once again NSW is open to all other states and territories (plus NZ). Last to close to Vic and first to reopeen.

If Qld stick to 28 day rule then out of the 3 locked out states, only Vic can get to 28 days by 30th Nov, so NSW and SA wont be able to go North for xmas break. There is no resource nor medical reason why Qld cant review situation weekly (or evenly daily of there are set rules rather than ever moving criteria). Monthly review is purely political.

I still see no evidence that Wa or Qld or Tas or NT have any confidence in their abilities to squash cases when they occur, since only lever they ever pull is state border closures.

This apocryphal tale of the broom handles is widely found on the internet. It is set in various places throughout the world, most recent iteration would have been during the HIV education campaigns.
The teacher must have been a very good storyteller indeed.
Sometimes the truth can be stranger than fiction, admittedly often there is more fiction. You may have noticed (from previous posts) that I may be a little on the 'prove it' side of the ledger - never assume....

He was a history teacher, so good at recounting salient points. He later (post early 1950s experience) went on to campaign in 1971, on behalf of Australia & NZ in the UK against the UK joining the EEC.

As disbelieving teenage boys in the mid 1970s, after he mentioned he had a couple of photos - we called him out.

We insisted he bring them in otherwise his name was mud. The following Monday when we had him again - out came two B&W serated edge somewhat browned photos of one of the 'educators' with an old straw broom with a very safe handle in front of an ancient looking thatched cottage, & the other one was a photo had one that looked like some type of scrubbing broom & the background was off a milking shed. I'll never forget those photos - caused such a reaction that the teacher from the neighbouring classroom came to see what was happening.

Given my 6 years experience of him I think the story & photos were genuine. As you may (not) know, when photos were printed in ancient times they often had a date on the back of them. The photo dates lined up. So if he'd made it up - he'd prepared for it over 20 years earlier!

Being the teacher that he was, only years later did I wonder whether this was his way of 'suggesting' or 'providing' sex education without providing sex education.

Now back to normal transmission.... :)

On that one active case, it was indicated about two days ago that they were a person in hospital who had been in hospital already for some time was recovering only very slowly.

Woohoo...being a nightowl and up late anyway I could not resist going for a maskless late night walk last night after midnight despite the rain. It felt so good :)

Sad fact - there are more DV incidents and murders over Christmas/New Year per day than the rest of the year, Easter is higher too but not quite as much. For too many families there are good reasons why they live in different cities/states & it may not be job driven.

What I don't like is that in England, we're coming out of lockdown 2.0 in just over a week and there will be a revised tier system in place. There is then going to be a travel/tier exemption in place for a period of days +/- Christmas to allow people to travel/see family etc. What is the point, honestly. Anyway, a bit off-topic as it's not Australia but seemed relevant given the comments here re: Christmas.

So what is the chance of people living in Tunbridge Wells being able to travel to somewhere near, um Nottingham? I think.

:) Thats a 3 hour drive. Would be considered a very long way apart in England. In Australia not so much

Maybe they need to test their eyesight? 3 hours? Meh. 😂. Son has only been in UK for a month or so now so he’s still an Aussie spirit.

It is a bit like the upcoming Thanksgiving in the USA. They are advising people to not travel to see family etc. But evidently flight bookings are up across the country, and all when spread is rampant and daily death toll high.

Heaven help the US come early December. I’m betting also that Black Friday stores will likewise be swamped.

Well the number one travel day in the US is traditionally the day before Thanksgiving. Far more than any other holiday.

Unfortunately for some people with severe untreated mental health issues it can be the straw that broke the camel’s back....sigh
It can be a big thing for them - I would hope they seek help for their mental health especially as Christmas is fraught with so many other stresses - people who strive for an unobtainable perfect day. In many cases Christmas is a time of fighting and misery for those people. It must be truly awful to have one's mental well being hanging on one day only.
States will open up when then they are ready - so no point in wishing things otherwise. I suppose I am a bit over worrying about things that I can't control.
