Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Actually an international arrival from Kabul who because they were consular staff was (ridiculously imo) given an exemption by Qld form doing mandatory hotel quarantine in Sydney Hotel, and allowed to board a domestic JQ flight to Sunshine Coast to isolate at home . Upon arrival in Qld they chose to get tested and were then found positive.

This is second time recently (after the BNE 3 came from Melbourne) where Qld have tried to make NSW accountable for cases which were clearly contracted elsewhere simply because they transited SYD airport. This doesn't help anyone, Fact is that person should never have been on a domestic flight as there should be no exemptions from hotel quarantine in the city of arrival for overseas arrivals (unless taken straight to hospital).

Feel for the domestic travellers on the flight who have now been unnecessarily exposed to covid due to this crazy exemption.
Consular is always a prickly issue. Do we have sufficient legal right over their actions?

assuming the Foreign and Defence Minister do the right thing on return from US, we really should have minimal exemptions........

One can only hope he wore a mask. We had an exemption in SA too from UK. She likewise tested positive once she arrived into Adelaide. Planes dont seem to be a particular risk factor. 🤞
Well there is a lot of More space on many international flights....and many are now required to wear masks.

The bigger risk on domestic flights now is not so much that you might catch the virus, but if you are unlucky enough to be seated in the rows either side of a Covid positive passenger, you will be sent straight home to quarantine for 14 days. No leaving your house for 14 days. No picking up groceries on the way home. Implications for all others in your household. Imagine the effect that is having on business travellers. If we are lucky enough to still be able to travel to Queensland in September, we have decided to drive, just for this reason.

The issue with consular applies to foreign mission staff. I thought from the way it read that this person was Australian consular staff.

. Perhaps it’s just that Vic never got to focus on which venues were spreading it, while NsW at least ID that and it’s a major focus (in my view they still need to look elsewhere)

If by venues your mean restaurants, pubs and cafes for on premises dining and drinking Vic never got beyond the limit of 20 per area, and even that has been closed in most of Vic (by population ) for some time. Whereas in NSW for example the numbers that can dine/drink at such venues are considerable.

If so, then this is the more likely reason why these venues have not been significant in Vic clusters, or known sources of spread in the second wave..

Well during the period from the outbreak to the suburb hotspot, Vic had not publicised any food venues or gyms or gambling establishment As being a risk for being visited a confirmed positive.

At the time, Vic Premier was angry At/blaming families. I’m sure because that was the advice given to him. How much attention was paid to downstream infections is unknown.

i noted from this thread someone saying Vic methods to contact tracing compared with NSW Are materially different. my impression is they were overly focussed upstream and not enough on downstream.

I’m giving Vic the benefit of the doubt by saying that it’s possibly because they never got the chance to..

so feel free to just point to venue capacity to justify a position....it doesn’t seem to grasp the whole situation.

My point is that if venues are closed to in-venue use that is why transmission is less likely to happen via such venues. Transmission via take-away is a lot less likely

When they were allowed to have people dine in numbers were very low. NSW has had some venues (ie Crossroads) were clearly vast numbers were going through. Many of the large pubs in Melbourne never re-opened at all as 20 people per room did not just the overhead costs for opening up huge rooms.

Family clusters were a fact of the early part of the second wave. ie north Melbourne Family cluster etc. For this reason many of the cluster were named as family clusters. This was well reported on. This was why the visits to homes were banned as an early measure in this second way.

While contract tracing has not been complete it has identified many clusters and pubs etc simply have not been significant. That is what has been in the reports.

They have closed gyms and casinos. So clearly they did believe they were a risk.
They have reported where all known cases have been related to venues including workplaces, shops, schools, hotels etc
You can only report a transmission case if actually happened, and was traced as a possible or actual site of transmission.

She flew from Melbourne to Adelaide. She was wearing a mask. And no one caught the virus.

State of disaster declared in Victoria.

ABC reporting a curfew in Melbourne from 8pm-5am

Shops will need to close by 1900 hours to allow staff time to get home.

Only one person per household allowed to go to the shops. No more family trips.

And a 5km radius for shopping and exercise. We’re lucky our local market just scrapes in as we don’t have many options close by.

Major closures of businesses to be announced tomorrow,

Unless out for a very limited range reasons. These are greatly tightened.

During the day most reasons apart from work now have to be with 5km .

Only 1 person can shop. Only once per day.

Plus a range of other measures.

Some workplaces will close. A list will come out.
Others will have tighter restrictions on how they can operate.

Very hard measures coming in for Victoria, let’s hope they accelerate the recovery.

NSW take note and hopefully will be more aggressive dealing with their outbreaks.

On the new measures, in brief they are aimed:
  • to make it a lot easier to police those that were not sticking to be at home or close to home. ie 5km limit, numbers out at once, and curfews (plus removes any grey that some may have misunderstood or were exploting)
  • to remove workplaces where physical distancing was not adequate (new rules on how businesses must operate, and that some businesses will need to close except for work at home)
All good moves in my opinion, though the full details still needs to be released.

Hopefully they close a lot of business types during the day.

if Stage 3 was lockdown and stay at home, I’m not sure what a night curfew would achieve. Just make it harder for emergency services shift workers to do their grocery shopping??? dinner must be delivered/taken away by 6pm??.

Yes and needed.

Though they will impact more those who were doing the wrong thing. Though some will lose employment. But with say abattoirs what other choice is there? (Note I do not yet know if abattoirs in the totally to close, or to only operate under new restrictions category).
