Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I hope the below is not a vision of Australia's covid future because I can't see us ever getting away from lockdowns if so --

UK vaccination figures on today's BBC news on SBS - first dose 89%, second dose 74%. (In the Guardian today the figures are a bit lower, although still much higher than Australia). But daily UK covid cases are 32,000 and daily UK covid deaths are over 90. Divide by 3 to account for the population difference between UK and Australia. Imagine if Australia had fully vaccinated figures over 70% but was still having daily cases of 10,000 and daily deaths of 30. We will all be locked up forever unless premiers and CHOs undergo a radical change of attitude to case numbers and deaths.

As far as I can tell the UK is in a spike right now, probably due to delta, and not long ago the UK case numbers were much lower. But it seems that despite good vax figures, the UK is currently experiencing way more cases and deaths than I can see being tolerated here 😱

Are you sure those BBC / SBS figures are correct? Worldometer shows as at August 4th, 12% partially vaccinated and 57% have had two doses (meaning 69% have had at least one dose).

Where is that 89% coming from?

Lookdown clearly lockdown finished, but various restrictions remained. ie Masks and no household visits being just two.

But what are you trying to advocate? Staying in lockdown when there are no known cases.
I just keep reading it as this is your own fault (Victoria).

The lockdown was lifted with:

  • Masks mandatory indoor and outdoor
  • Masks mandatory for 12yr+ in schools
  • No household gatherings
  • No sports crowds
  • Strict hospitality density limits
And that was on the basis of numbers in the community for days that could not have been any better.

Advice from friends in Sydney to us in Perth is to get out and enjoy life before the inevitable virus hits us.
Our hospitals are already struggling with too many patients and too few nurses and doctors.
We have been trying to get all of our hundred staff across Australia vaccinated but we know we have hold outs. That is something I just cannot understand.

It is based on adult population (18+).

Seeing as Brad is never going to get there it's 319 new cases.

Cases in Armidale. Locked down from 5pm.

I have to say that while he was a bit of a loose cannon at first that the Saturday press conferences have, IMO, been better with him leading. But yes, today is messy.

Unfortunately we are back in lockdown as 3 people chose to not go and get tested despite being symptomatic for an extended period of time, and even more so when symptomatic chose to still go to work, go out etc. And possibly 2 of those people also broke the no household visits rule.

Lockdowns work. And yes it had to come back because of the actions of a few. And yes some people are always going to do what they should not do whether is a lockdown current or not. And new sources for outbreaks are going to happen too. (Which is possibly the source of the Derrimut worker, and so the genomic testing that should come out today will be interesting).

So cases will be controlled. But new cases will keep emerging. Restrictions settings will keep getting varied and lockdowns will keep coming and going. Delta has just made this moreso. This is just the realty that we all currently face up until we eventually reach a high enough vaccination rate and we just start living with the virus which for the foreseeable future is going to be endemic.
Actually yes. Stay in lockdown when there were no known cases.

The Victoria playbook if you look back at the 2020 wave was to wait 28 days.

Delta is a game changer - At the time I was only thinking on this thread that a 3-5 day extension to the end of the week to see what might have arisen.

We will see if any of the infections are students - which would clearly have been avoidable. People would have got the covid outbreak financial assistance.

Now for I guess 8 days freedom in Delta - back in lockdown - avoidable infection and financial assistance is reset - need to apply again.

Many things are not done like they were in 2020.

ie When the 28 day guideline was first mooted the second ring method was not used. That method is also now stronger as it is 14 day quarantine regardless of test result.

I have to say though he comes across as more human and less poltican. I actually think for where we are at this is nice to see (noting that other times that style would not work ie you were calling a snap lockdown.

Tasmania press conference at 1130...out of the ordinary?
