Australian Dual Citizens Entering UK after February

That I can understand because US citizens have to pay tax to the US government on worldwide earnings even if they don’t live there
I think the tax compliance before the actual renouncing was also several thousand

New article on the ABC site.

Just shows how stupid people are if contacting a news organization to ask about passports. And too late. Its not a new announcement,

Hundreds of frustrated Australian British and Australian Irish dual citizens have contacted the ABC with questions about the new UK passport entry requirements that come into effect on February 25.

Annoying!

They know full well the question everyone wants the answer to, which is ‘if I have never applied for UK citizenship, I only have an Australian passport… how does the UK government know I’m British?’

The responses from the UK on this are bordering on misleading. The guy in the video talks about ‘you may be eligible for UK citizenship, go check out the website’. That’s *not* the question people want answered.

This seems like they're trying to get the policy to fit the situation. Not the other way around.

They could simply say… ‘no change, we have no idea if you’re British or not’.

As a dual citizen, I have now resigned myself to getting a British passport 25 years after the last one expired. Because it was so long ago, I'm starting from square one when applying but the best part so far is trying to find someone who meets their criteria for certifying my identity. They must have known me two years, not be related, must have an active passport themselves and be in a 'recognised profession'.
It even says if they are not the holder of a UK or Irish passport they may need to supply a copy of their passport as well. Just so they can identify me! I do have a few people I can approach but them being required to provide their passport details could be offputting to some people. 🤔

Yes its a PITA for sure.

I have always maintained any license/passport etc I have for as long as I can...even if I dont need it now...I may need it one day and its easier to renew than restart.
As SeatSon found out when he let his Aussie driving licence lapse and was faced with only having a UAE licence - which is not recognised here.
It was incredibly difficult to prove he had an ACT address so he could reactivate his licence. Luckily a bit of lateral thinking after some nod nod wink wink ‘advice’ from the registry counter staff saw him meet the requirements.
He has certainly learnt that lesson the hard way.

Yes, so have I. You just never know when you might need them, and it's also not an expensive or difficult process.

However, we also ensured that our kids born in Australia would have dual nationality, but they couldn't care less about it (they're not teenagers either, given that we're of pension age). Well, at least they have the option.

Data point for those affected.

I sent my renewal application in 9 days ago, after the whole thing blew up in the press.
Was sweating on a fast turnaround and expecting delays due to high volume.
This included seeing 2 other people in the Post Office trying to do the same thing and a PO worker commenting on the number of people they’d had in.
However, got the note that passport is shipping today.
So, a pleasant surprise, if anyone else is in the same boat. .

It seems this has only really blown up in the Australian media, there’s little to no coverage about this elsewhere. So at least you’re not competing with a worldwide influx of passport applications.

Thanks for the information. Had your existing UK passport expired?

Probably because there's more Brits in Australia than anywhere else

Interesting observation

Google says (with a grain of salt)

The highest concentrations of British expats are in Australia (approx. 1.1–1.3 million), followed by Spain (approx. 761,000) and the USA (approx. 678,000). Other top destinations include Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, France, and the UAE. Many British citizens, roughly 5 million, live permanently abroad, with a significant number choosing countries for better quality of life and retirement.

Another data point if anyone interested.

Given it seemed prudent for the future... Decided to get a new British passport. Last expired 2021.

Did online application 9/1/26. Sent in required documents (expired British and copy of current Aus) via registered mail 12/1/26. Received in UK and approved 20/1. Arrived in Perth via DHL 26/1 (delivered on public hol!)

Fingers crossed for the rest of us

SIL did her application for an expired passport this week. They didn't mentioned posting anything but said the complete application was extremely easy and completed quickly. They did say they took longer photocopying all her Oz passport pages than doing the actual application. So likely that's what they posted and not uploaded.

Many Travel Agents don't even know about it. Also someone they know applied for the UK visa in December and is a Brit citizen, there was no mention that within a few weeks this Visa would no longer work. Many will likely get caught out.
