Australian Cricket Season 2026-27 (150th “Ashes” Melbourne March 2027)

Again, there’s more to the story: if you’re calling for someone to be dropped you need to make the argument for who you’d replace them with and why.

So, I’d have dropped Labuschagne for this series and replaced him with Kurtis Patterson. Marnus should have been told he won’t be picked again until he displays sustained good form in the Sheffield Shield: apparently he’s very driven as a person so if he has the goods, should be able to prove it and force the selectors hand.

Patterson played two Tests again Sri Lanka and scored a hundred in one of them but was then dropped for other returning players. Has been relatively consistent for NSW and I’m sure I read a recent story where he was in the top 4 batting averages last Shield season.

Note that Weatherald earned his spot as an opener through first class runs, so if he’s good enough he will probably make it back.

Also interesting from those stats is affirmation of how ‘bowler friendly’ the comp seems to have become over the last few seasons. Historically most Shield bowlers averaged around 30 and those below 27 were being picked for the Test team. Similarly batsman generally averaged around 40 and those pushing up to 45 were selected.

In my opinion the Test team batting lineup isn’t being changed much because no one is banging down the door and demanding selection.

Yes I saw Pattersons first Test innings in Canberra
Dropped at short leg before he had scored and went onto make 100…

The ‘law of averages’ doing a real number on Bangladesh right now in Mackay: Australia might win by an innings after making only 210 first time out. (comments on Cricinfo indicate this would be the 4th lowest total for an innings win if it happens)

If a solid win here, the first Test will be forgotten and onward for the next series with ‘nothing it see here’ about the batting order… Maybe some early season Shield games might find many of them some form.
