Like all things in life, there is never one explanation that covers all the issues. Pitch contributed. Batting contributed.

Australia has a poor habit of letting some players play well beyond their use-by-date, letting those players dictate their terms even when form doesn't warrant it, promoting others too soon, failure to plan for the future in a controlled manner and banishing other players who deserve to be in the team. And in this case, the pitch showed them up. It does have a contributory effect and I'd reckon CA would have expected better preparation of it.
