Jessicatam said/mentioned she has never had to have this done, ie having Aust passport data page dipped into QF checkin keyboard.
I have a J flight MEL - WLG coming up. Presuppose I could go to the premium counter and ask for an Expresspath card and have the passport dip, or just go through the normal Aust exit (no Expresspath) and then pretend I didn't know the dip was still having to be done, and then do it at the gate.
Will be overnighting in MEL, so have more than 3 hours to move around the int secure zone after passport control.
Having done OLCI (apart from trips to the US), do you guys and girls still have to have passport dipped? I have filled in APIS on QF MMB.

If the question is: "Do I need to have my passport checked by QF before proceeding to immigration and boarding my flight?"
Then the answer is no. Your passport can be checked by QF in the lounge or at the gate before boarding.

QF offers online checking for international departures, if hand luggage only no need to go to any desk, the swipe which would be to verify passport details are correct would be done in the lounge or at the gate

Don't you need to have a BP prior to entering security (the person on the gate to security/immigration will check, Border officials will double-check the flight number on the BP against that written on the green slip etc)??

Even if you choose to check-in online at home, it appears that you still need to print your BP and have your travel documents validated prior to proceeding through security.

BD

Technically I think it's emigration(as opposed to immigration or customs) for outbound.

Immigration and customs (inbound) are the folks that could still ask Poochie to step aside for some questions if his passport is swiped or not....

I would usually refer to them as "emigration" however the Aussie norm seems to be the i-word (just as there appears to be a redundant word of "affect" in Australian English, but I digress!!)

Had this with CX the other day in SYD.

No check-in at counter as already checked in online (was HLO).

Border force were happy with crumpled, A4 printed bp and passport.

QF lounge scanned BP ("to on-bill Cathay" according the lounge agent). No passport check.

Beep at gate - checked at gate that I matched my passport.

My experience flying CX as well. No issues using a self-printed boarding pass from kerbside to plane-side.

In fact, a polite request at the check-in counter for a 'proper' boarding pass on card stock was flatly declined as I had "already printed out my boarding pass".

They used to be called the immigration department. I would suggest immigration is used as the name for the department that does the processing for people immigrating or emigrating. Noun not verb - much like affect/effect

Untypical I know, but I've departed several times without QF checking my passport at any stage.

My way of remembering the difference is - it's Emigrating for people leaving and Immigrating for people coming in

Well yes the overall body is Border Force (or Farce :) ) but I'm pretty sure the old sub areas such as Immigration/Emigration/Passport Control, Customs, AQIS and so on are still contained within.

It also occurs to me that customs also scan some(?) outbound bags in addition to the main job of incoming passenger screening.

I've departed and subsequently returned to Australia many times but have never emigrated from Australia because I've always intended to return.

Emigration from Australia and immigration to another country is a permanent state not temporary.

Yep, but that's why the Outgoing Passenger Card (and Incoming) have questions about intention to depart on a temporary or permanent basis :)

Either way when you pass through passport control (outbound) you're leaving that country and it's juristiction, but it doesn't have to be permanent.

Of course as we know many countries (eg: USA) don't have a specific "emigration" step - at least it is seamless to the customer - we identify when we check in, passport is swiped etc and you're on your way with no physical process (I still remember the days of surrendering the I94 stub) but it's still a step when you leave a country.
