I am currently in NZ but my phone cannot connect to any of the NZ phone networks, even though it can see three. I am using an Aussie Virgin mobile sim. I don't recall this being a problem last time i was here.

You need to have global roaming activated. If you haven't done so, call up Virgin and ask them to enable it. They require a $250 bond (non-refundable, they apply it as credit to your account) and you can't have any bills due, or have paid any of your last three bills late.

Outright not allowed on prepaid.
