Welcome to the Op. However I would point out that many people have had the opposite to his experiences. Many Sofitels are good hotels, but once you go down the Accor chain experiences are not so favourable. And most people have given up on A Club.
Don't understand the comment re redemptions in Starwood.
There are no blackout dates for standard rooms. Some possible exemptions when events are on but these are usually in the minority.

Westin Auckland - Closing down?

It's only been there a couple of years but already 2/3 of the hotel is closed, as is the restraunt and a bar. Rooms are already sub A$200 and talking to staff there it seems they are worried it will be closed in a matter of months... no more SPG in auckland? :(

Just found out that that Hyatt is being rebranded a Pullman overnight

Guests staying at Auckland’s oldest five-star hotel, the Hyatt, tonight will find the hotel has a new name when they wake up in the morning.

The Hyatt Regency will become Pullman Auckland Hotel & Residences just after midnight when international hotel management group Accor takes control.

Phew!!!! I had begun to think I had been misinformed all that time ago! I'm surprised that this happened BEFORE Westin though but this may be due to the legal action there.

Yes, you can tick off the first point :)

Ahhhh, bugger. Maintaining Hyatt Diamond in this part of the world is so difficult. And the Hyatt Auckland was a very nice property that gave due recognition to status.

That's a relief. I like the Westin Auckland. We need more Starwoods in this part of the world not less!

absolutely... ! we definitely need more Starwood properties here! hopefully, Starwood would return to Perth as well ;)

So...... After 2 years...... Finally my original information was correct. Just the timing was wrong.

I understand that the M Gallery was temporary until they had the facilities in place to achieve 5 Star status.

No hotel chain is worse than Accor- I absolutely hate them and have had nothing but disappointing stays in their properties- back in Europe already and same here.

What a shame- that leaves the Hilton in Auckland as the only acceptable option. And as lovely as it may be- they will probably use that unique opportunity to ramp up their prices even more! :(

What about the Langham hotel?
I now make that my choice and find the service to always be excellent. Location could be better, but for business it is fine. Have now stayed their dozens of times and am always happy. And the prices are very reasonable. But YMMV.

Never tried it to be honest but might give it a go next time! :D

I know YMMV, however I've had predominantly good experiences with ACCOR.

They are DEFO not perfect, but IME they have been a lot better than average.

I am 100% for room upgrades and the same for welcome gifts. I'm staying at Sofitel AKL next week when I'm back from Europe so I will be keen to see how it is.

I am NOT a fanboi by any stretch and I am Diamond with Hilton and Platinum with Accor and Priority Club. (All earned)

I have also stayed at the Langham in AKL and I like the hotel a lot. Get a room on the same floor as the lounge and despite the fact they are a fair way from the harbour, there is a courtesy coach ever 30 minutes. You can also be driven in one of their Lexus at a reasonable charge.

I did stay at the new Sofitel in Auckland for a few nights last week.

I was greeted by both the GM and Guest Relations Manager upon arrival which I felt was a nice touch.

Nice welcome gift of Champagne and fruit platter. 1 litre of still, and sparkling mineral water with a "with compliments" tag around the neck. (Replaced every day)

Staff were very eager to please and I was addressed by name every time I interacted with staff.

I am seriously thinking of staying there next time I am in AKL at the end of the month.
