ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

The points game is well and truly over (notwithstanding the ATO 2-month window) for bargain fares. Other than card sign-up bonuses, the likes of SNIIP etc are getting pretty close to revenue fares in some cases.
I was just reminiscing about my Singapore Suites flight from CDG-MEL for $756 one way, back in 2013. Yes, $756 for first class!
Those WERE the days.

Booked and flew with +1 a few years ago, the new Sq suites Syd-Sin (overnight)-Hkg for 62500 KF miles with small anount of taxes each. With redemption costs going through the roof, and earning points getting harder and harder, I think you are right :(

Running my numbers, while things are surcharge free-

Nab business rewards (not QF) vs Amex.
Amex plat charge is 1ppd on ato and 2:1 for QF and VA, 3:1 for SQ
Nab sig is 1.25ppd but 3:1 for VA and 5:1 for SQ

So seems like I should pay the next BAS on Amex, before it all possibly comes to an end.

If you have the QF NAB then it’s 0.66ppd (1 point per $1.5) and you should use this over the Amex plat charge

Any other thoughts?

It was a good run many years ago for me with the 3x spend via AMEX at Coles/Woolies on the Mastercards to pay the ATO and 1:1 conversion of AMEX > SQ

Those days are long gone and I gave up the ATO game a while back as the % fees for sniip and the like just wasn't worth it for tax bills.

The game is always changing, this door may have closed, however more will open in the future. I do feel the likes of QF and Velocity will need to rethink points earn (selling to banks etc) to keep their highly profitable programs relevant.

Amex Business or Personal charge. I thought the personal didn't give points for the ATO. Or did the surcharge make it uneconomical?

The surcharge made it uneconomical with Amex giving 1 point rather than the regular 2.25 for most other spend.
