ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Slightly off topic I had a land tax bill to pay in SA. Remarkably they limit each payment to $2,000 a time so it took 13 CC payments to get it done. The only nice thing about the time wasted was there was no charge for the CC points earned so it wasn't a complete waste of time.
I used Citi Prestige and Bankwest World mainly as the SA land tax folks don't take Amex.

My son has a St George CC so that will allow our family to have more redemption nominees if I load ATO on it for him. That card is very reasonable for 0.825 Kris Miles earning at 0.54%.

Carefull with St George CC, they are very strict with huge bill ato payments. Many has report STG will suspend your card.

Can you help me with the word huge. Is that five, six or seven figures before the cents?

SO far I get away with average $15,000 / month ato bill ( for the past 8 months ). I also use this car for daily expenses, when they dont take amex.

Other members got suspended when they do $30k/month.

Hey guys,

Does anyone know the best credit cards to use at the NSW Office of State Revenue.

Thanks.

My Citi Prestige worked last time I used them a few months ago. Expecting another bill soon.

I know some people overpay the ATO by card and then request a refund (which goes to bank account). Has this ever caused any problems for people? (In my case the sums are under 3k.) I've done it once and it went very smoothly, but if one develops a habit of doing this, wouldn't the ATO get suspicious/grumpy/difficult?

I overpaid by mistake when my accountant retired. The ATO refunded it electronically so it worked out ok.
I pay the ATO what feels like zillions and still no thank you note from the fiscal fiend.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

I remember reading that and thinking how glad I have the Westpac Amex Kris Flyer CC that is no longer issued and not mentioned.

For those with smaller ATO bills and have received this offer (targeted) to their Flybuys account - this could work well for you:
<<Can't post link to Ozbargain. 1000 Flybuys points (=$5) when you buy $100 ($105 w/ fee) Prepaid Mastercard at Coles >>
Spend $105 (on Amex, preferrably with Plat Edge + Local Champ = 420 pnts) get $100 to spend at ATO and $5 credit to your Flybuys Account w/- no surcharge
Spend $100 at ATO and incur lower mastercard rate.
Even without Plat edge and local champ - one way to get points from AMEX spend and convert into mastercard
Obviously needs to be processed in $100's so not practical for those with large payments to make.

Bit disappointed with this article from Chris - some of these card options could end up costing you $6,500 for a J return to Europe. At that price and with all the dicking around to get a $370k spend on ATO (that's a lot of reloads) I'd rather just buy on the open market.

That was my thought as well, there was no consideration of the cost per point, which some options were totally outrageous.

I have been doing above method for the past 3 ato bas - It is PITA ! But its worth it.

Coles gift card + $88 ww promotion , Must pay 1 card per transaction. insane long.

my Dec Bas has $17k bill, its about 170 manually pay :( I am worry ATO might not happy about this.

Oh wow, that is a lot of payments, I thought I was keen with $8k ATO spend - but I didnt get the offer (although I keep checking Flybuys in case I do).
If you have been doing this for a while - do you cop the $5 fee or are there normally deals like that fairly often which offset the fees?

Always bought coles prepaid master card $100 value + $5 fees = $105 But you get 1000 flybuys bonus points ( equal to $5 ).

The real winner is amex EDGE $1 for 3ppd. I have been lucky enough always received those flybuys offer, mother days, father days, valentine days. Sounds crazy enough, I have bought nearly $60,000 value using amex EDGE ( during the last 3-4 offers ).

Also flybuys points sitting at nearly 500k points ( you can convert this to velocity , and etihad ).

ATO Business Portal has been "down for maintenance" all day.

Back on topic, I accidentally paid (by JQ MC) the ATO the gross, not the tax, for the October PAYG. I was in credit for Nov PAYG (due December), but now have had remaining credit returned to my work account. Such a shame, now I'll have to pay them by CC again this month.

I just started imagining doing about 11,364 of those $88 gift cards to do a million dollar payment to the fiscal fiend.
Of course I am on holiday down at Bunker Bay so my mind was wandering/wondering a little bit.
