ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Changes to the Macquarie Qantas Rewards Program
Qantas Points earned on eligible transactions/purchases - the list of types of transactions that are not eligible to earn Qantas Points in section 3.2 in the Macquarie Qantas Rewards Terms and Conditions is deleted in its entirety and replaced with the following. This change will be effective on and from 11 May 2016.
Qantas Points are not earned in respect of the following amounts that may be charged to your account:

  • GST and government charges (including fines paid to any government agency)
  • payments made to the Australian Tax Office
  • interest and other bank fees and charges (including any GST payable on any of these)
  • BPAY[SUP]®[/SUP] payments, i.e. bill payments and other payments made through the BPAY Electronic Payments Scheme
  • cash advances
  • transactions for items that are directly convertible to cash (including, but not limited to, purchase of foreign currency and travellers cheques) or cash equivalent transactions
  • balance transfers
  • transactions deemed by us to be for operating a business or in connection with business expenditure
  • transactions that are reversed (refunds)
  • payments for credit card protection insurance
  • transactions used for gambling purposes (including gambling chip and lottery ticket purchases).
This means that Qantas Points will not be earned on payments made to the Australian Tax Office, BPAY[SUP]®[/SUP] payments, transactions used for gambling purposes and transactions for items that are directly convertible to cash or cash equivalent transactions.
The rest of this section remains unchanged.

same with the Macquarie Hilton card

Apologies for asking something that's the core of this topic and probably embedded in this thread..but after reading some hundreds of posts on this thread, I haven't really got the answer I need.
I'm looking at cancelling my Wollies MC and wanted to know what the experts here would suggest as a CC for ATO payments that would get points at near 1:1.

That horse has bolted pretty much.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Ibhayi I think you would do a lot better with QCUcc or Citibank Signature or Prestige for those non ATO bills. This may change but I believe it to be correct as at 31/03.

Thanks Cove. I've got a QCU card but the problem is their daily pay limit of $10,000.00 although it seems to have been increased a bit.

Meaning there's no such thing anymore? I know WMC still offers 1:1 up to $2500 per month (which I can live with), it's just that I'm up for renewal of the CC annual fee and don't want to pay this and then have them downgrade it or remove ATO payments for points period.

I suggest you call them before the annual fee is due and threaten to cancel - currently resulting in a waiver of the annual fee. See this thread:

Although don't screw up the call, like I have done in the past:

Woolies and ATO are finishing next month (May 10th).
To give an answer on a CC for ATO you need to know how much is going to be put on the card as the annual CC fee may wipe out your benefit. So let's say the annual fee is $190 and you have ATO of $10,000 it isn't attractive is it by itself. If the ATO is more than say $100,000 then the annual fee for the card is less of an issue.

Just to double check Cove, Woolies card will stop the points even up to $2500 as of May 10th??

Yes, just like all Macquarie cards. HSBC is the same. ie 2500 capping per month for 1 to 1 credit and no ATO points at all.
Hence the reason most of the horses have bolted.

Woolies and ATO will be a zero on 10/05/16 I believe.
Must remember to put $5000 on this month and early next month to get 7500 cheapish QF points before titanium scissors end the party.

I just got the email confirming this. Effective no points earned on ATO with Woolies from 11th May 2016.

So, I rang to cancel my card as I've just been charged the annual fee..the best offer I got was to waiver so I kept it and I'll earn a few more QFF pts till May 10th. Now, to look for other cards to pay my taxes with after that...

Not really happening pgsdiver as games like this are still running full tilt.
The question is do I want AA miles, Kris Flyer miles or Qantas points this month? What should the split be based on flight plans?

The Bank of Melb signature was still working last month. It pays 0.825 points per dollar once you get your birthday bonus.

Yes I shouldn't be so pessimistic I guess. Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to bankwest I go.
Rgds,

Yes. I received an email like the Macquarie one up thread yesterday for Woolworths Qantas Visa.

Prepay,Prepay,Prepay and if you are dyslexic stuff up a decimal point or two....to the right not the left !!!! not your fault, you were born that way !!

I think the party is nearly over !!

One wonders how many people will use credit cards when there are no points to be generally had ??? I think next to no one. I wonder how much money the card companies now won't earn because of the huge drop in transactions through the cards. yes I know it costs them but when the amounts are so big I can't believe they don't make a good earn out if or at least generate income that covers in part other costs of operation etc
