ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Katie I remember paying like that in 2009 before I read the post by js. Since then we have flown grandparents, our adult children, friends, sister in law and niece up the front of various brands of plane without breaching any redemption rules. It has been a lovely game.
This morning I think we can have breakfast in The Private Room in Singapore thanks to the ATO thread.

Hmm, this bill is beyond the capacity of all of our CCs, even combined.
But I may be able to get some on it - when the ATO website is up again.

We have NAB Qantas, ANZ generic rewards something, regular Amex, and Qantas Ultimate Amex between us. Oh, and Qantas Cash Cards. I've tried reading through the thread - is anyone able to kindly suggest which, if any, of these are worth using for what I can manage to put on them?

What about Vpay's?

You will earn points for purchasing these from Harvey Norman no matter which card you use to purchase them.

I used Vpay's to pay a recent tax bill.

Amex Ultimate is no good, ANZ probably no good, but may depend on specific card.

Earlier post indicated Qantas cash still works load limits may be an issue:
https://www.qantascash.com/rates-fees/limits/
$20k per day and $100k per annum maximum load.
Amex at 0.5ppd at 1.45% surcharge is too rich for most of us (2.9c per point).
Sounds like you don't have much time so may need to be a combination of Qantas cash & buying as many VPay as HN will let you buy at $300 each. I haven't used them for ATO but there are reports it works.

Showing my ignorance here - but this is the first time I've come across vpay. Why do we need to buy from HN? Can I use my Amex card to buy it at 1.5 points per $? Can I use HN gift cards which may be available from places at a discount and use them to buy the cards?

I'm assuming from a ATO perspective, it is just another Visa card - so how you initially bought them should not matter and it is more a case of if the initial purchase gets you the points.

100% ATO sees it as payment by Visa with the lower merchant fee applied and Amex sees it as 'retail' spend so it awards the usual points. Neat way of getting ATO to accept Amex with full points and lower associated cost.
Depending on the size of your ATO bill & how long you have, you'll be at it for a long time making $300 payments & HN may not want to sell you sufficient cards in one 'sitting'.

Thanks albyd - we might be able to pay some via the Qantas cash cards, within the daily/weekly limits perhaps, but can split it across our two cards.
The bill is already overdue, delays in submitting the required paperwork. So no extra urgency that I can't take a few days to sort things out. I've already paid a chunk via BPay.

Will also look at HN/VPay if I get a chance to get into a store; at $300 per card that might be ... fun/RSI-inducing. :)

Have a look at Coles Online MasterCard- $1000 at a time with $5 issue fee. They only take Visa/MC no Amex but if your ANZ Visa is point per dollar or close to, may be more expensive than VPay but may allow you to get a mix of VPay and Coles cards at lower cost than using Amex Ultimate direct. Again, depends on how much you need to pay and how much time you have to fiddle with it.

The Coles or Safeway non-reloadable Prepaid cards with a $1000 limit; can they be purchased and loaded in store with an Amex? At $5 for the card, that looks better than the VPay from HN (if $100 cashback is not available any more)

Try an application to Bankwest World for 80,000 QF sign on for $240 and 0.66 QF points for the fiscal fiend.
ANZ and NAB are a no. Amex Ultimate QF points cost 2.9 cents so don't bother.

Meanwhile the ATO has lost a petabyte of data.

All its online services remain down at the time of writing, almost two days after the problems first arose.
The ATO confirmed to iTnews that the issue was triggered by the catastrophic collapse of a hardware storage solution provided by HPE. It is understood the ATO acquired two new HPE 3PAR SANs late last year.
The collapse of the SAN caused the loss of 1PB of data.
The issue was compounded by the failure of back-up systems which did not kick in immediately following the initial outage: iTnews understands the data corruption issues from the primary SAN were replicated onto the second SAN.

HPE storage crash killed ATO online services - Hardware - iTnews

Surely they lost data for media hype but have it backed up in a warehouse somewhere for realists?
Did the ATO not watch MR ROBOT series?

May be a tad early to thank HP for some faulty hardware.
I looked to see if I can still pay my share by Dec 21st when it is due. Looks like I can.
My early payments on the Qudos CC are now almost all used up. Gee I will miss that point a dollar CC for the 0.54% fee.

<snip> Gee I will miss that point a dollar CC for the 0.54% fee.

For someone like yourself where it could make a huge difference in points earnt, why not look into the bank of Australia visa, there have been a few reports of it working in this thread at 1:1 for only a visa fee and uncapped points

So to summarise QF Cash Cards, we simply need to top them up, pay the ATO and we get the points at the Mastercard surcharge rate?

I am actually trying to simplify my ATO payments which unfortunately/fortunately remain on the larger size. I went for a Kris Miles and Qantas points this time and I am now clear for a month.

For what it's worth, I got my points for a payment to Department of Immigration and Border Protection, using my Qantas Cash Debit Card. Only 1 point per $2, but being a "government payment", I was going to get zero from both ANZ and Woolworths, so at least I salvaged some points.
