Lots of leg room as OzJet flies
Tansy Harcourt
2005/11/29

Former formula one car-racing identity Paul Stoddart admits his new airline is not having a blockbuster of a launch. He might be too kind.

Today is OzJet's first day of commercial flights and as of 24hours ago the fledging carrier had sold some seats for its peak morning and evening flights.

Is it really appropriate to quote entire copyrighted articles on a forum, especially where the article in question is charged at $3.30 to view?

Dave

In full in today's AFR, the article mentions that some middle of the day flights next week have NO seats sold and that the number of staff exceeds bookings on most flights (journalistic licence or truth??).

IMHO a bit silly to compete against QF quite adequate 767's on a 1 hr sector. Now MEL-BNE is another concept altogether.... up against QF's cramped 737's where the chance of an upgrade is next to nil, the flights long enough to want to spread out, use a laptop and do some work, and K class fares have gone up by more than 20% in the last 18-24 months.

The Sydney Morning Herald also carries an interesting article, quoting OzJets owner, Paul Stoddard as saying the flight time between SYD and MEL will be 20 % faster on OzJet than with a rival airline, with passengers being able to check in 15 minutes before the flight.

The inaugural flight carried Victoria's tourism minister John Pandazopoulos.

Very good point. I hope they get some business as we could do with the competition.

"20% faster" = less padding in the schedule? I guess that makes sense with not having connecting passengers.

As for check in deadline that's no later than QF for someone with no checked bags (or am I misremembering and its 20 minutes).

Using DJ's web check-in means that you can arrive 15 mins before departure too.

It all becomes academic when you shut the door on time, or even early and SYD ATC seem to always allocate a runway 34R northerly take-off behind five crash-8's and a metroliner , which means you cover half the distance and time to MEL on the wheels!

Or double the journey time to CBR  .

Know that feeling too well.

A short flight to/from AMS is another that way if get Polderbaan runway.

Some of the domestic & EU LHR flights also seem to spend longer taxiing than in the air, depending on your terminal.

Another interesting aspect in the AFR article, is the comparative value the last minute traveller can find on OzJet.

It basically says that a next-day one way flight MEL-SYD is $265 on DJ's full flexi ticket, while QF's full flexi WHY is $374 and full flexi J is $568, whilst OzJet is $325. Plus, for the moment it looks like OzJet has plenty of short notice availability

I think the saving in time is from the low number of pax boarding and exiting.

My flight today I was out like a flash (mainly due to there being 6 pax!). Had no problems with pax not arriving for the flight either :D

Seriously though. 80 maximum pax. That must mean that they can all leave and collect their baggage quicker than 180 pax in a less spacious plane.

Ah, so I'm not the only one who feels like we are driving instead of flying to MEL, etc!

Common experience. Once had a comedian, who captains jets for QF as his real job, make a similar type of comment whilst taxi-ing the 22:20 SYD-MEL flight down to the end of 34R.

But it's not only the taxi to Wollongong that's the problem, before you take off it's the series of right hand turns that take you half way to NZ before tracking back to MEL.

Ozjet flights cut back, and cheaper tickets extended. Article in the Sydney Morning Herald (2 Dec 2005), quoting Paul Stoddard conceding that OzJet has cancelled two out of it's eight MEL/SYD/MEL return flights yesterday.

"There is no point flying flights during the day with a couple of people on them," Mr Stoddart told the Herald. The two flights were in the early and mid-afternoon, a time normally quiet for business traffic.

Mr Stoddart, however, insisted all was going to plan despite OzJet also being forced to cut fares to fill seats. The airline has cut the price of its standard one-way fares from $305 to $249 from next week until January 31.

Australia's newest domestic airline, OzJet, has been forced to cancel a quarter of its flights between Sydney and Melbourne just two days after its launch due to a lack of patronage...

Seems that journalistic licence actually means that that was just for yesterday, but more cancellations have been made over the weekend.
