Article: Live Music in the Qantas Club

Really doesn't help the Qantas moniker at all. Have been in the lounge a number of times in recent months with the band paying (I think on Thursdays and Fridays). The best lounges are those that are quiet and calming that you find in many international destinations. Certainly did not win over the missus who doesn't travel all that often.

Not sure you’re following your own argument. This was in response to you saying they should “focus on the basics”.

And plenty of others saying they need to spend the $500 on food / seats / better IT security.

As I posted upthread I was flying out of NTL when they started this and it was really nice. Nothing like finishing a week of work and either going home or going on a trip, enjoying a drink with some live music.

It’s not like they’re playing hard rock or techno, it was pleasant tunes.

I get this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I’d argue AFF skews elderly and isn’t representative of QF’s customers.
Another fan of the live music in the bar at NTL on Fri afternoons.
It makes for a pleasant wait in the bar, even if you can’t hear the boarding announcements.
It seems to be very well received given the number of patrons there are. Don’t see anyone grabbing a drink and moving off elsewhere.

100%.

I think the kind of people flying Friday afternoons are probably the kind of people who will like this, despite the overwhelming negative response in this thread.

Though of the people who have experienced this, it’s overwhelming positive.

If not, QP SYD is huge, easy to escape it if you’re not a fan.

Note sure how jumped to that conclusion? I fly on Friday evenings more often than any other day. Im younger than the average AFF member and i do like live music when its an act i choose to go and see at an appropriate venue.

Qantas lounges are promoted as a place to relax, and i admit this can be hard with selfish people have loud mobile conversations and the odd ferral kids running about, but adding live musicians just seems like another polarising choice best avoided.

It would be good if lounges had quite zones (no kids, no mobile calls, no bands allowed).

Whilst the cost of the band may not totally cover catering improvements it could certainly fund paper towels for the bathroom each week (even if Qantas have to go for less lux type).

Again, SYD QP is huge, go to the other end.

It’s not quiet or relaxing near the bar on a Friday afternoon even without a band, it’s usually very boisterous.

QPs used to have quiet zones, but come to think of it I don’t recall seeing them recently.

I don’t think the paper towels have anything to do with money, more a carbon thing. Same reason we’re trying wine out of paper cups and eating with bamboo.

I thought (some) lounges already did have areas like this? That being said, I appreciate such areas are effectively the audio equivalent of a smoking area sectioned off by an invisible curtain that somehow miraculously prevents cigarette smoke from wafting into the non-smoking area.

Personally I'd enjoy a DJ dropping house beats, others may prefer a heavy metal band, operatic renditions or a country music hoedown.

But whatever personal music preferences are, that is not what a lounge is for. Just like someones personal calls or viewing in public places should be done through earphones, not through their phone / tablet / speaker.

There is already so much noise pollution in day to day life, I'm not sure why QF want to add to that during already peak boisterous times in a lounge.

Your choice of where to go is limited to where there are seats (or PowerPoints) available at the time you are there.

I havent been to the QP for a while (i go to the J) , but I was lead to believe it recently got smaller when they made the J lounge bigger.

Like a pissing section in a swimming pool :)

🤣 You're kidding, right? Nooooo, we’d never suspect Qantas of saving money would we?

You want music in the lounge? Get something through your phone and put the earphones in. Don't intrude on my amenity.

To be honest I am a fan of it on a Friday night - when I fly on a Friday night it is to go visit family or friends for the weekend and I have just had a long week at work (and I rarely do work on a Friday night!) , perfect to kick back and listen to the live music with a drink in hand watching the sunset!

What’s your problem then?

Not a problem, a personal preference. Although I will be very disappointed if this spreads to other lounges, as many airports only have 1; and as stated originally there are more important things they could be implementing.

Anyone who wants to listen to music can easily open Spotify on their device of choice and stream it to their own headphones.

You are a fan of this initiative, seems like most here and everyone Ive spoken to at the office are not.

Not sure why you are compelled to challenge others preferences, just accept they aren't going to agree this is a good idea.

If QF want to support live music at SYD, they should get the acts to play in the space which used to house the Qantas Heritage Collection and has been unused for half a decade and add a buffet with some drinks.
