That is a shame. That was a great use of QF points in J and F from SIN to MEL with very low taxes.

I've recently booked a first reward for the SYD-CHC fifth-freedom flight, leaving in a few months' time (I'm very excited).

I'm yet to book the return leg; I've noticed that it gets back into SYD @ 19:05 - what would the minimum connection time be to make a domestic flight out of SYD? (I'm guessing that 90-105 minutes is too tight to take into account passport control / immigration, collecting luggage, transferring to separate terminal, re-checking-in luggage. I'm also assuming that the luggage can't be sent all the way through to my final destination.)

If it is too tight, I might consider a non-A380 route back (as much as I'd like to take it).

@Mattg, thank you for your response.
I was looking at getting the QF flight to ADL that departs at 20:55 (for a meeting the following day).

If I return to Sydney on the EK A380, it would be on a separate ticket as the EK flight would be a reward flight and and the following domestic flight will be a paid one.
(Even though EK and QF are partners, I doubt that I could have the bags checked all the way through.)

I think the safest thing to do at this point is to either (a), come back a day early with an overnight stay in Sydney, or (b) 2 connected QF B737 flights in Y to get from CHC to ADL.

My preferred option would be EK and QF on the same night but the timing is tight and I can't afford to miss the flight, especially if the incoming flight is delayed.

I'm happy to hear of other suggestions.

Will the on-board bar be open for this leg (as it's a morning flight)? I'm aware that there are showers on-board, so that will certainly be a different experience.

Will I get access to both the EK and QF F lounges in SYD?

Unfortunately, I've got this flight one-way, so have only got one chance to experience everything.

You will have to use EK check-in and will most likely be directed to the EK lounge. Once airside head to the QF lounge your F BP will get you access to the F lounge under the QF/EK agreement. Once finished head to the EK lounge at the other end of the airport to the EK lounge, 99% of the time EK boarding happens at that end of the airport however there have been times when EK use gates at the QF end. Check when arriving and if this is the case start at the EK lounge (short visit) and then head to the QF F lounge. In general EK lounges lounges throughout the world are generally the same so if you have seen one you have seen them all, SYD fits this category.

Also when travelling EK F ammenities and PJ should be available to all F PAX however on these shorter flights they will generally not be offered and you will have to ask for them, they will normally have most PJ sizes available but not always. If you are not ashamed to ask, just ask for everything and EK will normally give you all the kit (PJs, ammenities, slippers, tote bag etc.).

Have an enjoyable time and make the most of it.

Did that once and made the mistake of getting off the plane. Could have just laid back and relaxed instead, by the time we got through security it was time to reboard…

CHC-SYD is a decent one - with the longer flying time to enjoy the bar (or a shower in F!).

Hi, all,
I thought that I would report back from my first fifth-freedom flight.

@Matt_01, this one fell into the 1% and took off from the QF side of the terminal. Therefore, I visited the EK lounge first (on the other side), which was empty. I then made my way across to the QF F lounge, which was full (there was a waiting list for a table, so I just ate at one of the viewing chairs and saw my EK A380 arrive, and a QF A380 in the next gate over).

I did ask for the amenities (pyjamas, etc.) and they were happy to oblige.

The check-in lady was very helpful and did explain about both lounges (I actually saw her again when it was time for boarding).

@I love to travel, I really did want to ask for the second serving of caviar but I was already full by that stage. It was very nice.

I made sure to make use of the bar (even though it was earlier than I would normally drink - I didn't want to waste this unique experience) and did order a drink. (Had this not been a morning flight, I might've had an extra one.)

The F section of the plane was very quiet (maybe one other passenger), so more staff than passengers, which meant that they were very attentive (and I obviously didn't have to wait long to get answers to any queries).

The shower was a unique experience. The heated floor was very noticeable. The water didn't pool, like some hotels do.

All in all, it was an amazing experience. It was just a taste of what it would be like to ride that plane for a long-haul flight - something that I hope to do one day.
