Planning the return from Europe for September and Istanbul to BKK then BKK to SYD are both 9 hours which splits the return nicely. And I noticed that Royal Thai has a 0830 flight out of BKK arriving at 2030. Mrs Warks says she sleeps better on day flights so that will be the go.

Not sure they're "steering clear" but short of something like the QF32 mentioned above, a QF "day flight" would require the inbound Oz-SIN flight(s) to be most likely a night flight up to SIN. Although, strangely, many here seem to think that a "sparrow's" arrival is a good thing for business people (personally I hated them), l

Whilst as a basic rule I prefer to avoid overnight flights wherever possible, the north/west bound overnights from East CoastAustralia to SE Asia are IMHO more palatable than the south/east bound ones from SE Asia to Australia. They are slightly longer and have better departure and arrival times for sleep.
