I've got a friend arriving into Melbourne next week from LAX and I want to surprise them by meeting them at the airport - but for the life of me I can't remember whether there is one exit from the customs/baggage claim area (hopefully) or two or more exits (which will make surprising them a lot harder!). I'm usually flying in from the U.S. and after 15+ hours I'm just looking for any exit! Can anyone remember/enlighten me?

Two, they can turn left or right and come out either end.
Do you mean that they come out through the one set of automatic doors then turn left or right immediately where everyone is waiting at the handrail height barrier or is there two sets of automatic doors for them to choose from?

There are tv screens now so you can watch to see who comes out which exit.

Yes, there are 2 and screens to watch. The 2 exits are only about 20 metres apart.

Travelers who don't get a second round of screening tend to come out the West most door as it's the shortest route.

Not being pedantic but LHS would depend which way you were facing :)
LHS as you are facing the doors from the outside.
