Yes we would consider widebodies, but not just the ones you mention and in fact certainly not the B767 which burns more fuel per seat than the B737-800. Interestingly it is likely that the aircraft families that replace the B737 and A320 will also replace the B757, B767-200, A300 and A310 - that is we could be in for some new generation short haul widebodies with up to 250 seats.
If waiting for the 737/A320 replacements, then you will be waiting quite some time. Both Airbus and Boeing have said they will not be doing this until there is a leap forward in engine technology that will deliver the 20-25% efficiency improvements needed to justify the development, and neither is going to start now and let the other come in later with a more efficient product. So they are looking to things like geared turbofans that may be able to deliver the fuel savings needed.

When the technology is available, there is going to be a huge demand from most airlines looking for short-haul options in the 140-250 seat category.

So the only new generation option that is somewhat optimised for short-haul ops that would be available in say the next 2-8 year window will be the 787-3 and that has not been a big seller so far (has anyone ordered it?).

So I can only assume that you mention of short-haul widebodies with up to 250 seats means 787-3 or you are looking at probably 8-10 years out.

Brisbane - Sydney? Joking right?!

Maybe you could check out Tasmania (LST/HBA) flights, there are rumours DJ are planning to downgrade some of those routes... hope not!

Also if Crazydave / Yadayada are still looking at this thread, out of interest, would DJ ever move or add some domestic widebodies (like 767 or 787s rather) for the high traffic Mel-Syd etc?

(I just hate the 737! Regardless of which airline is operating it!)
I think you have to expect they will need to position aircraft around as the fleet grows...but going from the usual eastcoast trundlers with IFE etc to a plane with not much ...maybe DJ have already launched their "ultra lowcost" airline and forgot to put out a press release;)

Nope, as far as a search goes, I did a specific search over the majority of DJ routes for the 12th and 13th of November (although KVS doesn't like Olympic Dam). There were no Tassie services that I could find on the network for these days other than the BNE-HBA return.

As for Sydney, its actually being used in peak times. The BNE-SYD sector is 17:30 to 20:00 and the return is at 7:25 to 7:50am the next morning.
