Some things we have learned. Each little island originally had an open area with a church and a well with a cistern underneath and then small streets surrounding it. This makes a lot of sense when walking around as you are constantly coming out of narrow streets into big plazas. Hundreds of tiny bridges as well.

I hope this isn't too many photos - every little canal is so beautiful. The first photo is of the bridge of Sighs. Lord Byron was the one who gave it the name.

Looks like a great journey ,am interested to see pictures of CE ,I presume on a B767 .
My wife & I did a lot of rail in Italy last year ,trains were great but keep an eye out for pickpockets ,in Rome 3 teenage girls did a job on a 40yo male ,it happened 3 metres from us but so quickly that no one knew what had happened till it was all over .

We do have one on a 767 - lhr-ist. The rest are 319 or 320. Fairly unimpressed with the seating on the 319 - it was pretty much Y seating with the middle seat left empty. I will take photos of CE on Rome to London and London to Istanbul for you. Pick pockets are a constant problem in Europe!

Your photos are beautiful! I so love Venice.

I have a friend who is doing the tour that you were originally booked on. She too missed out on the original ballot but got late offers 2 weeks ago. She also had a few hiccups with the booking agent, but all sorted now. She is also in Venice at the moment.

Your reconfigured itinerary sounds great and I will look forward to reading about it.
Safe travels.

I am sure your friends will have a great time. Do you know what number they were on the waiting list? - it would be interesting to know far down it went before they filled all the spots!

I'm not sure, maybe around 14,000 or so. But as I understand it they were contacted and just had to produce their booking confirmations by the 31st March and then on the 3rd April got tickets.
I think there were a lot of tickets in the original ballot not taken up.

Venice = beautiful! Your photos are exceptional. This TR is whetting the appetite for our Xmas visit.

Two restaurants for you to try Riviera which was beautiful and Il Ridotta which we didn't make it to but it was recommended by a board member and the menu looked great.

We stayed at the Corte di Gabriella - a boutique hotel, in a very quiet area but very easy distance of San Marco, Rialto and Accademia. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent - sweet and savoury pastries all made by the chef.

We have enjoyed the food here from the ubiquitous linguine with mussels at A Beccafico at San Stefano square to the cuttle fish on Murano.

Our favourite restaurant was definitely Riviera - bit pricier than the others but a whole league above in experience. The owner came around to talk to everyone - he was quite charming and posed for Mr FM.

We did visit I Rusteghi - it was quite an intellectual challenge to find it, but it is a lovely, quite upmarket wine bar in a secluded courtyard.
