Are Qantas Double Status Credit Promos Really Worth It?

So I've been pondering lately whether the double status credit promos are really worthwhile...

In my own experience even when i receive the Double SC targeted promos, I prefer to wait for Sale fares which I find are usually 50% off the Saver fares

This effectively means that for the same $ spend (for example i can book 2 trips at $2000 each on sale vs 1 trip at $4000)

On top of that physically taking 2 trips I will end up with a similar amount of SC earned than what a DSC promo would yield as the sales fares still give you 90% ish of the status credits of a full paying fare. eg. a 50% off business sale fare earns 200 SC vs 220 on Business Flex.

Anyone else thinking the same?

I've never seen Business Saver cost twice as much as Business Sale - the difference is usually about 10-20%. Here's a popular DSC route example:

In any case, the best value is found on Sale fares booked during DSC, assuming future DSC promos do not exclude I class.

Depending on the route it's definitely possible. E.g. SYD>AKL sale is $500-$600 and saver is typically ~$1,000

I don't doubt that it is possible, but I think it'd be quite unusual. Using SYD-AKL as an example, prices are currently $546 vs $836 so a little over 50% premium to fly Saver. Certainly not twice the price.

Again, my point stands that Sale fares are usually eligible for DSC and obviously the best value if they're available on the route you are after.

DSC worth it?? Blud oaf :)

Most recent one I was tossing up for a conference in Charlotte, intending to go, then DSC came up which pushed me (somewhat willingly) over the line. Got quite a nice bunch of points which then gave me 500 SC bonus which then put me 1 local trip (already booked some time before) short of Gold. Which then meant QC extension, saving me AU$500+.

Only thing that would’ve really burnt my bacon was that I was late deciding/booking. Lucky me! If I’d booked the trip, then 2 weeks later got the DSC email? That would’ve been a TWO beer day !

Which gives me a question I’d been meaning to ask. Do the DSC offers always come in around the middle of the year? Or is it totally random if/when they come in?

To provide some context, i most usually have to travel to the USA..

During the USA fly away sale for example the past weekend the business sale fare was $2999 but today now that the sale is over its 3635 which is about 60% of the saver fare.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I guess what I’m saying, to use a more direct answer, is that I would struggle to afford work time for >1 trips (self employed). So the DSC (if my timing gets lucky) really is a good outcome for me.

It would be perfect too if a DSC promo popped up when the fares are on sale.. but that's probably wishing for too much haha

Husband decided to join me in Europe in Nov Dec (I am going on a points ticket )
So trip is already decided. Ticket is usually around $7000ish
Double status came out and it had to be a non sale fare. So husband bought a non sale fare...about $2000 more and now gets double credits.
Yep worth it when the timing is right

yes i guess it depends upon each persons situation. eg. i am also self employed, but am fortunate that it is online based so as long as there is Internet available we can work remotely.

I do think timing comes into it as well. There's no certainty about when/if a DSC promo will be run or what the rules around it will be or if you'll be targeted, so if a cheap fare comes along then it's often better to just book it than gamble on a possible DSC promo at some point in the future before your need to travel that also won't cost a lot more.

Actually that looks like 17.5% reduction for the sale price (3635-2999)/3635 = 0.175

It depends your aim - if I know I won't be able to travel much during the year but the DSCs will put me through, I'd say so.

I'm 100% self-funded and I ended up planning a lot less trips than last year but most of them (except MEL-AKL) were in DSC. In some instances, the difference I paid between non DSC to DSC wasn't much and definitely worth the status. For example, I booked around xmas period MEL-LAX which was probably $150 return difference than the normal fare, but I'm netting an extra 120 SCs.

Worth it if LTG is a goal for QP access until boarding passes exchange for a zimmer frame.
Some of us would rather walk to the final ambulance... ;) In say, another 30 years (that's 100+)
Still waiting for a useful DSC promotion. JQ max bundles are about as close as I have come....

Just wandering

Past experience is that they dry up all the sale fares right before the DSCs to ensure there's no double dipping.
