We currently have J award tickets SYD-AKL-PPT booked for July, flying QF for SYD-AKL with overnight in AKL and QF code share on TN AKL-PPT the next day. I received a flight change notification this morning that our AKL-PPT flight, which was booked for a Tuesday, has been put back two days to a Thursday flight since it appears that TN will now only be flying that leg on Thursdays and Sundays at this stage. We already have flights and accommodation booked on Bora Bora and don't want to lose two days there so I called QF today to try to be moved to the Sunday flight, two days before our original booking. After three calls and being cut off on the first two calls while on hold while they were checking flights for me I spoke to a QF operator who is telling me we can only get on QF149 that departs SYD at 7.15pm and arrives in AKL at 12.20am as that is the only flight with J classic award seats available. We would prefer to be on the original QF145 flight that departs SYD at 11.15am rather than arriving in AKL after midnight.

I asked if could he speak with a supervisor and request that we be able to be on the same flights as originally booked but two days earlier. He came back and said he was told that this can only be done if the flight date is only moved by no more than one day either way and not two days. I pointed out that it was not me who cancelled the flight and that there are now only two flights a week for AKL-PPT. He said he will speak with someone later when they come on duty and call me back within 24 hours so we'll see what happens.

I have looked up the price of revenue fares and can get a Business Saver fare for $1871 which seems reasonable so I'm considering cancelling the award ticket and booking the Business Saver if QF won't book us on an earlier SYD-AKL flight. We paid $285.70 each for taxes on the award tickets so we would get that back as well as 68,400 points each refunded.

For cancelling before departure the QF website says for flights to Tahiti "Cancellation fee A$300 applies". I would hope this would mean we could have the balance refunded and not as a flight credit. We don't plan to cancel since we have the whole trip booked but in case of unexpected sickness you have to be prepared. Does anyone know if Business saver fares are refundable for cash (less the $300 cancellation fee)?

Yes. You'll have to call up for the refund though, the cancel button on the QF website will offer you a flight credit (you can get a flight credit without any cancellation fee).

Note: Your topic title is a bit confusing as you call it a "Business Saver award", when it's not an award

Thanks encryptededdy. I should have put Business Saver tickets. I've just edited the title. I guess I'm just so used to mainly booking award flights although I knew I was asking about revenue tickets, so when I read over what I'd written before posting I didn't pick up the error I made with the title.
