Apple Airtags

A small technical question please, the holders generally have a hole in the middle, is that to make it Bluetooth effective
Most likely. UWB (Precision Finding) and Bluetooth LE range are significantly impacted by things like walls etc so I'd say wrapping the AirTag in a completely enclosed holder would be to the detriment of its range/performance.

Question: Do the air tags have a battery, I don't think they are RFID. How does that go down with being in checked luggage?
That's a good point. I think it's okay as long as they aren't taken out of their housing and obviously not being charged.

I've been thinking about getting them as well. The only downside being no iPhone, only iPads.

Some technical in the article below

It's the size of a watch battery.
I remember when they came out Officeworks chucked a hissy fit and refused to sell them because they use button batteries that kids like to eat... and I believe they still wont stock them. That said, they do stock Tile (competitor) that have the same batteries, and in my experience with both products, I find it easier to remove the Tile battery than the AirTag battery. Easier to beat up on the bigger company though.

I have one of the old Tile that you can't replace the battery so a bit annoyed about that

It's quite useful that you can set them to ping you if away from you after a given length of time too, useful for not leaving your wallet behind or some other useful tech.

I guess I'll find out, but can you set then to ping your phone *immediately* when, say, 10m away? That would be best for wallets.

Deleted.

So much this. This is my one and only qualm with AirTags. Especially with things that are commonly shared such as car keys, luggage etc.

It's strange because if you use Family Sharing, you're able to see the location of your family's other devices (iPhone, iPad, etc) but not AirTags.
Probably to late now but you can share Tiles as I am able to see my mum’s wallets, keys etc.

Just rec’d, and set up but it says its next door, not at my house. That’s an error of about 30 m.
Anybody else have this happen?

Those that use these for checked bags, have you left them in the baggage, or do you have them on a chain externally? I'm considering getting some, but was thinking I'd leave it in my suitcase, rather than having it externally.

Separate point, if you're looking for a way to fit one in a wallet, the Find My network allows third parties to make accessories and this one by Chipolo – Chipolo CARD Spot - Chipolo is supposedly pretty good.
They are good. I bought some for bags.
2 year battery life and replacement cards are 50% off (can’t replace the battery)

They look like they might be better than AirTags for a number of scenarios, not just wallets.

Would it stick better on a laptop say, underneath between laptop bottom 'legs' and not stick out at all, rather than a loop attachment thing for the tag? Be more discrete in the lining of anything?

I agree. The amazing thing is they arrived in Sydney from Ljubljana in 2 days!

They work exactly like AirTags, minus the “arrow” directing you to where the item is in the last 3-4 metres. They beep loudly though.

Executive Traveller suggests that it makes no difference putting it inside or outside your luggage.

I would personally prefer to place mine inside my luggage. Less chance of losing them in the carousel system.

I know what I want for Fathers' Day this year !

So just reading the reviews on Choice about Bluetooth trackers. The guy that was in another country was still able to track his Apple airtags because of other Apple products nearby but I can't quite workout how the Tile brand works if you're out of Bluetooth range. Any explanations and play nicely please  and don't say GIMF because today it isn't
