I guess if you need the card/want to keep it then that's probably the only safe approach. If the card isn't necessary, then you can call up and threaten to cancel unless they waive the annual fee +/- offer bonus points to keep you. However, they may call your bluff.
I cancelled and got my annual fee refunded by CBA. I actually didn't want the card and forgot to cancel before I got charged. This was a few years ago. I got another CBA card, again, and don't need it, again, and I got charged, again. So gotta call up and ask for refund and cancel. Hopefully they refund it for me again

I'm not willing to keep it if I have to pay the annual fee so my threat would be real. I'll call again and try. I've tried to cancel my CBA card for the last couple of months and they have offered me 10,000 CBA points (4,000 Qantas) twice now to stay. My annual fee isn't due until December on that one but the agent last time said call us then and we can talk about the fee, so they seem very keen to keep people. I think you have a chance, good luck

Reapplied for this card after around 16mths since closing a previous Black card. Approved straight away.

Long wait at the bank today. Closed my CBA plat card and got my fee refunded. As I already have a current CBA bus. Plat card. the retention team member only asked for the reason and I said it was because I use the bus. plat card now.
