I’ve recently been doing a bit of comparative research on Health cover as I’m sick of MediBank Private (sorry, bad pun...).
Given the points earning potential I naturally included the Assure product in the list ....

I’m keen to move on from Medibank Private. Probably will go for Defence Health, after a 60-plus day switch via Assure in the interim.

At the risk of wandering off-topic a little (while nonetheless still remaining inside the borders of Health Insurance Switching considerations)...

Further to my switch from Medibank to Defence: a few days after I had committed to the move (and presumably after Defence had lodged the churn notice with Medibank), I received what appeared to be a standard form email offer, trying to induce me to cancel the move.
The inducement offered was 6 weeks free this year, and another 6 weeks free next year - effectively about 11.5% premium reduction each year. As an example, on a $5,000 per year premium, that’s worth about $575 a year for 2 years.

As it turns out in my case, the amount of the inducement is roughly the same as my expected annual savings from making the switch (taking into account the annual premium, and reduced gap payments on our regular use of the extras cover). So I’m not tempted to switch back.

But for some readers considering making a switch, it may be worthwhile just giving them a call to see what sort of retention offers you can shake loose... (and if it works out, then in 2 more years rinse & repeat :)

the Assure price quote was about $1500 a year higher than the APIA price quote!

In the end I went with Defence Health as I preferred their policy & price. But for anyone looking at taking out the Assure product, it may be worth your while shopping around a bit to see what your ‘free points’ are really costing you...

.

Sounds about right ..... but you only need to stay with Qantas Assure for 3 months to get the bonus points, and $1,500/year is $375/3 months. The current Qantas Assure sign up bonus points offer is 120,000 - I’d pay $375 for 120,000 points every day of the week if I could!

It depends on the level of cover you end up taking out.

Yes, definitely. I was just referring to the specific example mentioned by There'sOnlyOneJimmy (top hospital and top extras, which costs an extra $1,500/year in his case).
