Received a 'Parking in a Restricted Area' in Sardinia Italy some years ago, do remember the incident, being a bit lost in the parking / intersection & copping abuse from couple other Italian cars, was interesting experience, took it on the chin. Didn't know I was in the wrong until we were friendly informed by the locals.
Had no idea was a camera & no sign of police.

Didn't think nothing of it until over a year later I received the fine in mail, don't recall anything from car hire company, direct from Italian authorities, I couldn't read most of the letter, not Italian.
Ignored it & the next 3 or 4 letters that arrived over following 18 months. They've since ceased, crickets.
Not sure why my credit card wasn't just charged...probably cos I don't hold CC's longer than 6 months....another advantage of churning!!

Have thought what on my return one day to Italy, highly doubt immigration linked.

Circa 2018 I received a parking fine from the city of Beverly Hills; I had parked my rental car on the side of the street, which was free till 5 or 6 am. I had an early flight back home, but I must have left few minutes after the timed parking had started. I received the fine in the mail directly from the authorities, and not from the rental company (Hertz). I received it about 45 days after issue date, and I was given 28 or 30 days from the issue date to pay it. I called them up and explained, but I got a very typical American answer: "the system says no"! I paid the fine, and the late payment fee.

I got a letter from Avis saying they had received a fine for me not paying the toll on the Dartford Bridge in the UK.
The letter stated that they’d paid the fine but we’re not going to bill me!
I think it wasn’t worth their hassle to recoup the £4 fine.
I got a fine for the same thing plus their admin fee. I was ready for it because in their terms and conditions they clearly say they will pay and charge your credit card if you use the crossing. I got reimbursed.I wonder if this is an extra little earner for Avis a trap for the unwary.

Copped a fine in Florence Italy years ago for entering a restricted zone. The hire company passed on my address details and the Itie council sent me the fine via a 10 Euro registered post letter, of which my postie did not get me to sign for. So basically I played dumb as I unaware of the fine, since I did not receive anything 😀. A Couple of years later I received a nicely worded letter from some WA debt collection agency with some insane (if my memory is right) amount of $500 plus Oz. I contacted the mob and said I have no idea what this is about and have never heard from them again.

I got a fine once for driving in a central city zone in Bozen Italy unknowingly. The fine came from the city council in the mail 11 months after the fact! Something like a 60 EUR fine. No, it has not been paid and knowing how absolutely bureaucratic and slow Italy is, I am confident I'll be able to rent a car there in the future.

I've received 2 fines (2 years apart) from the Florence authorities for entry into restricted area, one I agreed with the first and paid it. The second was the same offense but this was the only way to access to carpark for the hotel and I wasn't aware I had to register the car through the hotels reception. (both times the rental company had provided my license details) I didn't pay the 2nd one and have only had 1 followup letter. (2019)
