Anyone else had an overseas speeding fine arrive in the mail?

Received a speeding fine in the mail this morning from when I hired a rental car in Italy three months ago. Anyone else had a speeding fine from overseas turn up in the mail? Clocked at 78kmh in a 70 zone by a camera apparently - considering that it was winter and night time and I was struggling to get google maps to work properly I'm not too surprised that I might have missed seeing a speed sign!

Surprised the rental company didn’t just bill you after the road authorities billed them as the owner of the car … can imagine a lot of people would just ignore it, unless you go to Italy and they have some arrangement with immigration I don’t know what leverage they’d have over you? Maybe Italy can’t legally bill the owner if they can’t identify the driver?

Also - what is wrong in the world when only 78 in a 70 zone gets you a fine in Italy!

I challenged the fees to the credit card bank as I’d received no other advice about it. I sent Avis I think in Madrid was the email on the agreement, asking about it but never got a reply. That satisfied the credit card bank and they reversed the charges.

Oh, how do I know the ticket was for driving in a restricted zone? Because the hardcopy of the ticket and letter of fine arrived in the post about a week after the bank reversed the charge.

Yes - as above.

This one doesn't even give me the option of paying by credit card - they want it paid by bank transfer - and because I didn't pay it within 14 days because I didn't receive it until 19 days after it was issued the fine has already gone up!

A few years ago I got a fine for a road toll in Portugal that I had not paid 2 years earlier....fortunately I had a photo of the car rego so knew it was "our" car. Whilst tempted not to pay, I could pay online and thought I better pay as I was planning to rent a car in Portugal again

Yes, at least twice possibly three…, via AVIS. They charge a “processing fee” (about US$40 from memory) and they used to send a hard copy of the fine (ignore at your peril if planning to return), but I think the last one was an electronic link to the fine (last one was Spain precovid).

I'm a recurrent offender (speed, parking, other restrictions) so much so I am the butt of the andye dinner-table jokes.
I had two from the same trip to London and ended up doing the (quite interesting) speed awareness course. A litlle ironic as the top speed from either was 27 mph so hardly Ayrton Senna
Always get an admin fee from the rental provider too for extra irritation

Google it, but it would vary by country but Spain gives a discount if you pay within X days (often difficult by the time you receive it), but then the fine goes up, and up. Unpaid fines can be serious offences in many countries (Oz included). The risk of being summons to court on reentry to a Country is not a good way to start a trip.
