I flew from Avalon Airport to Sydney last evening (Thurs 16/10), and am curious to hear from others who may have done also, particularly those on JQ 624 or JQ626.
I was on the later, and while making my way down the highway called the phone service to check its scheduled time of departure. Ontime for a 2015 departure. However after collecting my boarding pass from the kiosk an announcement states that due to the late arrival of my aircraft boarding would take place some 40 min later. The 624 which was meant to leave half hour prior to mine is also running late. Seems reasonable, then a second pa is made declaring that boarding is likely to take place at 2140hours. No other explanation provided. I take myself out to the service desk where I am greeted with the usual curt lip service, and here is where my concern/interest/curiosity sees me posting on this site for the first time.
I was told that ' the radar tower in Sydney was down, and as a result were only landing one plane at a time, and letting one take off' I was also made aware that this was the case in Melbourne Tullamarine. It was a safety measure and nothing Jetstar could do about it. At this point I am thinking maybe it aint that safe to fly, should I offload etc etc. Eventually we board, and make the dash to Sydney, landing 2 minutes before the curfew.
Today I looked at the domestic arrivals/departures of Qantas out of SYD and MEL around this time, to find that while they had delays, they were were of only a few minutes, with many flight arriving/departing on or before so.
I have searched for any news coverage of this incident, thinking it would be news worthy to no evail. The aircraft that became my JQ626 to Sydney also flew into Avalon empty, literally minutes after pulling into the gate, was on its way. This despite being told be the ground staff at Avalon that it was a late departure from ????. Does Avalon rely on either Melb or Syd for radar navigation?
It's somewhat bizarre to me, so thanks to those who care to comment and/or correct my hightened sense of curiosity to this event.
Cheers Clip

As someone who has taken their share of JQ 624 and 626 flights from AVL to SYD I call BS. These JQ flights are always running late and I've heard all kinds of excuses...the radar being down is a new one however. Departing at 21.40 is a bit rich....the few times my JQ flights have been late I've gotten $59 or $79 fares so that has balanced the issue - but for the JQ pax that have shelled out full price ($180+) it is pretty poor.

Can't comment on the event, but after the aircraft takes off and leaves the airport control zone it'll be under the control of Melbourne Radar. Not sure what point it hands over to Brisbane Radar though.

The more you fly around the world the more excuses you get from checkin staff as to why things aren't right (whether it's delays, seating or whatever). I think many of these excuses are made up!

clipc78,

Welcome to AFF.

As nlagalle correctly states,
As soon as the aircraft leaves the Avalon Tower frequency it would be handed over to Melbourne Radar and later to Brisbane Radar and subsequently to Sydney Approach and then Sydney Tower.
Whilst it seems unlikely (due redundancy) that the radar was down somewhere at some point it is possible. A more likely scenario is that several controllers called in sick at the same time and they were short staffed which would then restrict the number of aircraft to be processed at any given time. By the time this message got to the JQ staff it would translate to Sydney Radar had a problem.
Then again it's also possible that they had aircraft issues and simply made up a new story :!:

I did the arrival last night at AVV at 7.45. The pne before us (leaves 3mins prior) left 10mins late, and mine was scheduled 40mins late, then changed to 10mins late, but we arrived in AVV smackbang ontime.

Mabye the aircraft just had a busy day. The crew said sorry because the plane had been in use since 6am.

In the end, its usually just general delays at Sydney, passengers taking their time, tech issue, or delayed pushback....

JQ flights toward the end of the day usually become somewhat delayed. Mabye a 35min turnaround might help, especially in Sydney...

Thanks for the comments to my post a couple of days ago. After further hunting for an answer, it would seem the 'Book of Excuses' used by Jetstar is big enough to bunji jump from!! So much so, I would assume writing to Jetstar and asking for an explanation would treated with the same rope learnt lip service you get in person. For I have a looooot of questions for any power(s) to be at Jetstar regarding a couple of recent flights on Jetstar, like how two passengers boarded the wrong aircraft I was already seated for? Or, why a clearly intoxicated passenger was allocated a seat in the emergency exit with has similarly well juiced mate?
My list of questions is long to say the least....
Cheers
