Any way for an Aussie to stay in Europe longer than 3 months?

I'm interested in going to Europe for longer than 3 months - max 6 probably but I believe on an Australian passport you can only stay for 3 months max in a 6 month period.

Is this correct?

Any way around it such as getting a business visa (will be working online while travelling)?

Can you leave some part of Europe and then return?

Maybe contact the Embassies/High Commission/Consulate of the countries you wish to visit and obtain a visa(s)?

If you are under 30 you can get a working holiday visa. Failing that, I'm not too sure. Perhaps you could do 3 months in the UK, and 3 months in the Schengen Zone. I'm not 100% sure if that's allowed but off the top of my head I think it is.

I don't think the 3 months will just reset if you leave the EU and return. I think the limit is 3 months within a 6 month (or perhaps even 12 month) period in total.

Just turned 45 so can't use the under 30 rule.

Doing some time in the UK would work perhaps.

Australian passport visa free entry into Schengen is limited to 90 days within 180 and a period determined by Immigration Officer of up to 6 months for the UK. If your stay is longer then that period, or for a reason not covered by the visa free rules, then you can go get a visa.

The 90 in 180 rule is just for Schengen - it depends where you are going. You can stay longer by spending time in the UK/Ireland or far east Europe (ie anywhere outside Schengen).

There are longer stay Visas available in various Schengen countries with proof of income but they are a bit of a hassle. Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Spain and Portugal all have them from memory (and doubtless others too).

The German one is an option if you're working online and want to hang around there for up to 2 years but you need to get a short-term rental contract and health insurance first: Residence permit for the purpose of freelance or self-employment - Issuance - Services - Dienstleistungen - Service Berlin - Berlin.de
